Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour Overview
Upper Mustang (formerly known as the Kingdom of Lo) is the northern-most part of Mustang district which shares its border with China’s autonomous State of Tibet. The area was restricted demilitarized region until 1992 so any foreigners were not permitted to visit the forbidden land. After 1992, the restriction on foreigners was lifted. Though the restriction is lifted, foreigners need to have a special permit to visit this region. Due to restrictions, nature, local culture, and traditions have been preserved well. The majority of the people being Sherpa, the main language and culture of this region are Tibetan. Buddhism is the main religion of this region.
Now, imagine riding to one of the raw, untouched well-preserved region of Nepal. Seems thrilling, right? It is.
This adventure motorbike tour is preferred by most locals and foreigners as it offers stunning views of the Himalayas, dusty and rugged winding roads, challenging terrain. The barren windswept rocky hills with minimal to no vegetation, small settlements, lots of gompas and chhortens, scattered colorful bushes, vibrant prayer flags, etc. lures any rider to stop and admire the region quite often.
The 14-day long off-road journey starts after leaving Kathmandu on an off-road capable motorbike. The ride kickoff from Kathmandu to a beautiful city of lake, Pokhara and passes through winding roads adjacent to green high hills. The road is quite easy up to Beni but the real adventure starts from Beni. From Beni, we will be accompanied by the roaring of the Kaligandaki River along the ancient salt trading route between Tibet and Nepal all the way up to the Temple of Muktinath. Riding alongside the world’s deepest gorge, The Kaligandaki Gorge is an outstanding experience itself. The unspoiled lifestyle of aboriginal people, historic and ancient monasteries, ancient mystic caves add more fun to the adventure. Not only that, we will get to know about the ancient Buddhist culture and Tibetan lifestyle of the local Sherpa people.
The rebound is through the same route with an extra day at Pokhara. On our extra day, we will explore the city of lakes and caves, involve in adventure sports like Paragliding, Bungee Jumping, Cannoning, boating, etc. The city offers the finest pubs and bars to chill out and share your adventure stories.
Upper Mustang Motorbike Tour Itinerary
Once you arrive at Tribhuwan Internation Airport, one of the company's representative will welcome you and help you to transfer in your hotel. After some rest, we will organize a welcome dinner for you. There we will have a short briefing about the trip.
The journey kicks off on an off-road adventure motorbike(preferably Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 cc, 350/500 cc Royal Enfield Bullet or Honda CRF 250 l) along a black-topped Prithvi highway to Pokhara. This part of the trip is easiest as we will be riding along the smooth highway. After riding for 5 to 6 hours with occasional stops for tea break, we will reach Pokhara in mid-afternoon. Upon reaching Pokhara, we will check in to our accommodation, get fresh and rest. If time remains, we will ride to Sarangkot to admire the panoramic Annapurna Range, Mahendra cave, Bat cave, David's falls, Begnas lake, etc. During the evening time, we will explore the lakeside area that offers different foods, bars, pubs to chills out, and many more. Overnight stay at Pokhara.
After having breakfast at the hotel, we will start our journey towards Tatopani, Myagdi. Tatopani is a historically important place and is equally important now as well. It is a trading post between China and Nepal. The first part of the road up to Beni is relatively easy but from there our real adventure begins. Mud and slush, loose rocks, bug bumps, etc along the road makes your ride challenging. But that is why we are here, ain't we? There is a natural hot water spring that is religiously important to Hinduism. It is believed that bathing is that spring cures most of the skin-related diseases. Upon reaching Tatopani, we will relax at Tatopani Kunda( pond). Overnight at Tatopani.
With an early breakfast, we will hit the road for a more thrilling adventure. The road to Jomsom is completely off-road. We will be accompanied by Biksi Khola and then Kaligandaki River all the way up to Jomsom. We will pass through green hills covered with pine forest up to Lete. From Lete tree lines slowly begin to disappear. Upon reaching Marpha, you will see apple yards, green fields which is quite unique in such a barren brown area. After riding for some hours, we will reach our today's destination, Jomsom. Jomsom is the main tourist hub. Trekkers doing Annapurna Circuit Trek, Upper Mustang Trek, Muktinath bike ride, Muktinath bus tour settles here for rest. Thakali people are the local inhabitant of this place majority of whom follows Buddhism. We surely need a good rest and a good shower after such a challenging and long ride. So we will check in to our accommodation, get fresh, take some rest. IF we have leisure time, we will explore around Mustang and reach Dumba Lake which is only a 20-30 minutes walk from Jomsom. In the evening, we will have an authentic Thakali style meal. Overnight at Jomsom.
With a deserving good rest and an early breakfast, we will ride towards Muktinath. The road passes along the bank of the Holy Kaligandaki River. Expect some water crossings, loose gravels, bumpy rocks up to Kaagbeni. From the Kaagbeni, the road to Muktinath is black-topped. Riding for about 2 hours, we will reach the holy site of Muktinath. Muktinath Temple carries significant importance to Hindus and Buddhists all around the world. The Temple contains 108 natural taps and two small ponds. According to Hinduism, It is believed that all sins you have done till now will be washed away by bathing in those 108 taps and two ponds making you eligible to enter Heaven. You will see many local women making different woolen apparel using traditional handlooms, selling Shaligrams ( ammonites)/fossil rocks. Shaligrams are religiously important to Hindus and are found along the bank of the Kaligandaki River. Some of them are found to be more than 6 millions yrs old.
After spending some time at Muktinath, we will follow the same route to Kaagbeni. Along the way, you can see the masterpiece of Nature, snow-covered mountains on one side and completely loose brown and barren hills on the other, green patches of fields and small river valley settlements, etc. We will check in to our accommodation after reaching Kaagbeni, a culturally rich place with kind and generous people, mud houses, dark small alleys, imposing Chhortens. Overnight at Kaagbeni.
With an early breakfast, the adventurous ride to Ghami kicks off. Ghami is the third largest village in the Lo region. A 4-5 hours ride along the unpaved, dusty countryside roads will take us to Ghami. You will get a chance to observe traditional-style Tibetan houses, eat Tibetian food and meet and greet local Tibetan-Buddhist people. Green patches of barley fields in such barren areas look absolutely contrasting, which lures any bypassers to wander through such fields. Overnight stay at Ghami.
The most thrilling journey begins as we ride towards Lo-Manthang. The road passes through the shadows of giant Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna, and Bhrikuti peaks. Riding further, we will gently ascend towards the windy and dusty pass of Lo-Manthang. From the pass, we can get a magnificent view of Lo valley. We will visit the historical old royal palace in Lo Manthang, get to know about local culture, food and traditions, old Tibetan monasteries, and stroll around the valley of Lo. Overnight at Lo-Manthang.
With a full overnight rest, we will explore the valley of Lo-Manthang, get to some viewpoints to admire the amazing landscapes of the region. This will help us in acclimatizing for our next day's ride. We will ride to some off-road trails leading to amazing viewpoints. Overnight at Lo-Manthang.
Today we will ride to Kora La (Kora pass), the border between Nepal and China, and get back to Lo-Manthang. Kora La is the trading hub between Nepal and China. This pass is used to import and export goods to and from China. This pass is a historic salt trading route. We will explore around the pass, admire the view of peaks and return to Lo-Manthang. Overnight at Lo-Manthang.
We will start our return journey from Lo-Manthang to Gheling. Along the way, we will see Annapurna massif slowly coming near. Shortly after dropping off the Tibetan plateau, we will reach the beautiful village of Tsarang. We will spend some time observing beautiful monasteries, barley fields, etc, and hit the road again. We will pass through different beautiful settlements along the way to Gheling. Steep dusty roads, beautiful panoramic views of mountains add more thrill to adventure. Overnight at Gheling.
Following the dusty, sturdy roads filled with sandy soil, we will continue our ride towards Kaagbeni. With frequent stops and rests, we will arrive at Kaagbeni. Overnight at Kaagbeni.
Following the same road which we used to come to Kaagbeni, we will reach Tatopani within 6-7 hours. Upon reaching Tatopani, we once again dip ourselves in a hot water pond and relax. A cold beer, a beautiful conversation about the journey with your fellow riders and some refreshing memories await you in Tatopani. Overnight at Tatopani.
Today we will be officially leaving dusty, mussy, stony roads after reaching Beni. We will trace back the same route to Pokhara. With a bit of time left after reaching Pokhara, we will visit the mountain museum, Begnas Lake, and other places which we missed in our previous stay. Late evening we will chill out at a pub/bar with chilled drinks, share our experience, etc. With good food and late-night refreshment, we will head to our accommodation for a deserving rest. Overnight stay at Pokhara.
With a wake-up call in the beautiful city of Pokhara, after having a wonderful breakfast, we will pack our stuffs and hit back the highway to Kathmandu through the same winding roads alongside green hills and river. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your accommodation. Late evening we will offer you a farewell dinner with our guides where we will hear your experience with our trip. Everyone's feedback is appreciated. With a farewell dinner, we will end our night and trip.
