Gokyo Lake and Everest Base Camp Trekking Overview

The extended version of Everest Base Camp Trek, Everest via Gokyo Lakes Trek is one of the greatest trekking routes in Nepal Himalayas. The extension of Everest Base Camp with the stunning Gokyo Valley and the Cho-La pass puts Gokyo Lakes trek above all in the bucket list. Best Time to do Gokyo lake with Everest Base Camp 

Primarily , Nepal offers two peak seasons for trekkers to trek in Nepal : Spring- March to May and , Autumn - Spetember to November. Spring welcomes you with new leaves with rhododendron bloooming. The weather is relatively warmer in lower region but it is still cold in hugh Himalayan area. The sky is clear and blue with high visibility. Autumn season is best for those who like greenery , blue sky and a little colder than spring. The temperature is cool and the weather is clear with small chance of snowfall in upper regions. There is no probablity of rain in this time so the sky is clear with no to small clouds. This menas you can enjoy the scenery from everywhere without worrying about any obstrutctions. However the drawback od these two seasons is they are crowded with fellow trekkers. Those who prefer to trek in solitude away from crowds can trek this Gokyo and Everest Base camp in in June in a little bit of mud and rain does not bother them or choose December to january if a little of cold is okay. But it is not recommended to trek during mid winter specially without a guide as mot of the teahouses are closed and some parts of the trails are lost due to heavy sonwfall. If you wish to trek during winter , we can prepare an itinerary so that you will get full prepared for the cold winter. 

Guides and Porters in Gokyo lake with Everest Base Camp trek 

We highly recommed trekkers to hire a professional and licensed guide along with porter while doing Gokyo lake with Everest Base Camp Trek. The trail to Everest Base Camp is relatively marked while to Gokyo is tracherous . A highly experienced huide will help you understand the traditions and culture of the area which can be missed while trekking solo. Our guides are professinally trained for safety and security of the trekkers. There are may myths and legends about the Everest Region which is interesting and our guides can help you understand them and translate it to English so that you can understand better. For porters , they are a necessity if you are trekking in Everest region . Walking uphill 6-7 hours a day with a large backpack can be tiresome and you won't be able to enjoy the scenery and and adventure. So we recommend trekkers to hire a porter so that you can carry your backpack only with your personal belongings needed for the day. We provide porter on 1:2 basis. Every two trekkers have 1 porter to carry their stuffs . The weight a poter will carry is 25 kg maximum which divides to 13 kg per trekker. 

Cost of Guides and Porters vary from 20 US$ to 25 US$ per day for guides and porter each.

Apart from your stay at Kathmandu , the trek normally takes 17 days to complete . But the days can be extended as per your request .

4. How difficult is Gokyo lake- Everest Base Camp Trek ?

The classic Everest Base Camp trek is considered moderately difficult but with Gokyo lake in persuit , the trail goes beyond moderate. However the treail's difficulty is based entirely on Trekker's physical and mental preparation. Since both the destination are above 5000 m and requires continuous uphill walking of 5-7 hours a day , this trek is moderately difficult compared to other trails. We recommend our clients to prepare for a month before starting this trek so that there will be no hardships during the adventure . However , we can create a custom itinerary for our guests as per their requirements . 

5. Will I suffer from altitude sickness while doing Gokyo lake - Everest Base Camp Trek ?

Anyone , even the expert high-altitude trekkers might experience altitude sickness if they are not prepared enough. Since the trek is considered difficult and is a high altitude trekking , we have prepared our itinerary to suit everyones need. We will take frequent break in between the trek and carry acetazolamide tablets in case of emergency. There are certain things a trekker need to follow to avoid high altitude sickness .

  • take a sip of water frequently during the trek 
  • walk slowly and follow the guide's request. 
  • stay with group/guide even if they are walking slower than you 
  • avoid consuming alcohol in high altitudes
  • if any symptoms of high altitude sickness is experienced , inform your guide immideatly and wait for the safety procedures recommended by the guide 

Symptoms of hugh altitude sickness

  • loss of breathe 
  • urge to vomit
  • dizziness
  • weak muscles 
  • severe head ache 

NOTE :If any of the above symptoms are seen , immideatly inform your guide for further actions. If you are far behind the group , immideatly start descending and inform your guide.

6.What is the best time to trek Gokyo lake- Everest Base Camp ? 

Since the trekking trail runs through upper himalayan region , weather is very harsh there and can change any moment. Its not recommended to do this trek during winter and monsoon. The best time or season to do Gokyo and Everest Base Camp Trek is normally during Spring ( March- May ) and Autumn ( September -October ) . This trek can also be done in Early winter and early monsoon if you wnt to avoid the crowd and enjoy the amazing Gokyo and Everest region in peace.




On reaching Kathmandu via various respective airlines, walk to airport terminal exit, here our guide and staff receive you with a warm greeting and then transfer into car or coach (depending upon group size) for the short drive into the heart of Kathmandu city. 

On reaching your hotel check into your rooms after rest and refreshment join in the main hall or lobby with other members of Gokyo Lake & Everest Base Camp Trekking for a briefing of treks with do's and don'ts.

Morning activities start after breakfast, where our city guide will accompany you to interesting World Heritage Sites in our wonderful sightseeing tour, which helps you to gain knowledge regarding local culture and traditional life of Nepalese people as it was for many past centuries.
Tour leads around Kathmandu Durbar Square teemed with local life around historical sites and monuments, then heading due west at Swayambhunath Stupa (popularly known as Monkey Temple where large numbers of monkeys found around).  

Morning transfer to the domestic airport as per your flight time for a short panoramic flight to land at Lukla, getting into a smaller aircraft (Twin Otter or Dornier) with 30 minutes on air with great views of Himalayan peaks includes Mt. Everest.

On reaching at Lukla on its unique airstrip known as Tenzing - Hillary airport, from here a slow start with few hours of walks downhill passing many Sherpa farm villages and well-tended crops and vegetable fields and terraces with views of Kwangde and Kusum Kanguru peaks.
After 3-4 hours on the first day walks reaching our overnight stop in a nice lodge at Phakding, transfer into your rooms with sound of glacial Dudh Kosi River nearby.  

Today a long day to reach Namche Bazaar, starting with the gradual walk following the river upstream and crossing few bridges to reach Sagarmatha National Park entrance near Monjo village.

Sagarmatha for Everest in Nepalese and Sherpa call Chomolungma in both languages means 'Great Mother' from here a pleasant walk on the river bed and then climb for few hours into the forested trail with views of snow-capped peaks, as the walk reaches you at exciting town and village at Namche Bazaar.

A rest and a free day at Namche Bazaar for proper and necessary acclimatization at this great height of above 3,440 m high before heading higher ground, at Namche spend the day with a scenic hike around and browsing the streets and shops, Namche holds a colorful and busy Saturday Market every week.

After an enjoyable time with rest days at Namche Bazaar, the morning starts with uphill for a short time and then walking on the gradual winding path to Shanasa village. 
From here our route diverts away from main Everest base camp trail heading with a climb on quiet trails uphill towards Gokyo Lake.
As climbs start on steep up to Mong small village at 3,973 m high, located on a high ridge facing views of surrounding snow-capped mountain views, from here downhill to Dudh Kosi River to reach at Phortse Thanghka for lunch. 

Morning walk from Dole with a climb along a side of the valley, where rhododendron forest fades for small bushes of juniper, walk gains altitude slowly. 
Walking then on a level path for an hour to Lhabarma Kharka and Luza at 4,390 m high and then skirting around a ridge walking downhill to reach Machherma village.  

From Machherma, our journey continues to reach third Lake of Gokyo, the walk follows a scenic path to Pangka, a small area and then following one of the glacial-fed rivers which flows from Ngozumba Glacier and Mt. Cho-Oyu. 
The walk leads to a climb by the side of a glacier, passing at first Lake and then second Lake, to reach third biggest Lake called Dudh Pokhari or Gokyo Lake.
Around Gokyo Lake, with many good lodges facing grand view of the Lake with the world's 6th highest Mt. Cho-Oyu and other range of peaks.

Early morning hike up to Gokyo Ri, a scenic hilltop at 5,357m for wide panorama facing views of Mt. Cho Oyo, Gyachung Kang, Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse, Taweche and far as to 
Mt. Makalu towards the east. 
After a grand view from Gokyo Ri, descend back to Gokyo for breakfast and lunch with the rest of the afternoon free at leisure or take a short walk of a few hours.

With leisure time with grand views at Gokyo, today a short walk to a small place at Dragnak often pronounced as Thangnag also, located beneath Chugyuma or Cho-la (Tsho) pass and at the foot of Ngozumba glacier.

Starting early morning leading to a steep climb towards Cho-la pass often spelled as Tsho or called Chugyuma.
After a strenuous steep climb of nearly four hours, reaching at the top of a pass above 5,368 m high, offering close views of Cholatse and Nirekha peaks, and then descend to a small hidden valley at Dzongla for an overnight stop. 

After breakfast, the walk follows to a higher ridge and then on the gradual path to reaching above Thugla often spelled as Dughla, where massive Khumbu melts into the raging icy river.
From above Thugla with rest, walk leads to a lateral moraine and stone memorials and then to Lobuche for an overnight stop, a place with several good lodges, while on walk views of Lobuche Peaks, Khumbutse, Lingtren, Pumori within Mahalnagar Himal range.

Today walk leads to another highlight of the adventure reaching Everest Base Camp, walk carries on for few hours with a short steep climb in between over glacier and moraine, reaching at Gorakshep, beneath the lofty peak of Pumori and Kalapathar. 
The walk continues towards Everest Base Camp over moraine and ice to reach base camp, here enjoy the view of tumbling and notorious Khumbu Ice Fall and glaciers.

Morning a steep uphill hike to reach on top of Kalapathar at 5,545 meters, the highest point of the adventure with fabulous and unique views of mountains includes Mt. Everest at its closest.
After a great thrill with sweeping views descend back to Gorakshep and continue to walk up to Thugla, from here on a downhill to Pheriche within the windy valley.
A pleasant walk leads you to Pheriche for overnight stop within a scenic valley with many good lodges includes a health post of HRA (Himalayan Rescue Association).

Walk leads with grand views heading to a river and then over a bridge with a short climb and then on the downhill to Somare and Pangboche villages, after the bridge back into the green with tall lines as the climb leads at beautiful Tangboche Monastery located on a small plateau.

At Thyangboche enjoy marvelous views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Kangtenga, Tharmarserku, Kwangde with magnificent Mt. Amadablam, an afternoon with time to visit its interesting monastery and observe monks and priest on prayer. 

From here heading towards a small place at Kyanjinma, an hour before Namche Bazaar for an overnight stop.

From this isolated and peaceful spot heading back to Namche Bazaar and then downhill to Dudh Kosi to reach at Sagarmatha entrance and exit gate to reach at Monjo village for overnight after a pleasant day walk.

Our last day walk of this great adventure, morning leads on the gradual trail crossing a long bridge to reach Phakding, and then on the way to Lukla with few ups and downhill with last and final climb of an hour to reach at Lukla for last overnight stop in Khumbu and Everest region.

Morning as per flight time transfer to Lukla terminal building, then board in a small aircraft for an exciting half hour flight to reach back into hustle and bustle city life of Kathmandu.

Last day in amazing Nepal the country of Himalaya wonders, depart from the hotel as per your international flight.
