Gokyo Ri Trekking Overview
Gokyo Ri trek is one of the exciting, adventurous, and lifetime experiences trekking routes in Nepal. The journey will start from Kathmandu- Lukla flight of about 30 minutes. The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is quite exciting as Lukla Airport is among the challenging airports in the world. And we will be viewing all the panoramic views of mountains, valley, villages, jungles, and many other beautiful natural beauty.
We then move towards Namche Bazar by walking and this is the formal starting of our Gokyo Ri Trekking. Beautiful scenery on our way to Namche and even higher places will attract you again and again. The panoramic view of mountains, hills, and the way filled with snow will never let you feel tired and exhausted.
The beautiful Lake, valley, and its surroundings after reaching the Gokyo Ri make you feel ‘ I'm not going to leave this place. These are the combo trekking routes, where you will be exploring everything that can be found in the high Himalayas, some Lakes & glaciers as well.
As winter is colder than it was suitable for Human beings, the trekking routes remain closed in the winter season. The level of snow rises day by day and can even cover up to 1 meter. Which makes us human being uncomfortable with what we are willing to do. Gokyo Ri is a peak situated at 5350 meters around Gokyo Valley, and it is tall enough to see the majestic Mt Everest.
Surrounding of Gokyo Ri
There is a total of 19 lakes situated in Gokyo Valley, and every one of them has pure water and you can even drink it. Gokyo Lakes, hotels around it is the last place before the Gokyo Ri Trekking. This area offers the best view of other peaks around this place including Island peak, Mera peak, and Amadablam. The resort can be found in the lower region.
You will also be exploring Icefall and glaciers around these places. Gokyo Village is important for its cultural aspect also. Buddhist monasteries, Flags, and the lakes themselves have some cultural beliefs. 19 Lakes that can be found during Gokyo Ri treks are said to have cultural beliefs for Hindu People. And the monasteries inclined towards the Buddhist People.
Gokyo Ri trek Difficulties
A moderate Gokyo Ri trek difficulties depend upon when you want to go trekking. At the time of winter, the place seems much colder as mentioned earlier. The temperature may fall up to -25 degrees celsius. This cold environment and surroundings may make us feel a little bit uncomfortable. Altitude Sickness is the main problem during this trek.
Even Though we will be bringing cures for the sickness of all kinds, we recommend that you book this trekking in the Summer or Autumn Season.
Best time of Year
As winter is much colder and in the rainy season, the way seems much slippery than it is in the other season, The best time for Gokyo Ri Trekking is in Summer and Autumn. In these seasons we can have the best panoramic view of the mountain and its surroundings.
Getting to the top of Gokyo Ri is also easier in Autumn and Summer.
Gokyo Ri Trekking Itinerary
On reaching Kathmandu via various respective airlines, walk to the airport terminal exit, here our guide and staff receive you with a warm greeting and then transfer you into a car or coach (depending upon group size) for the short drive into the heart of Kathmandu city.
On reaching your hotel check into your rooms after rest and refreshment join in the main hall or lobby with other members of Gokyo Lake & Everest Base Camp Trekking for a briefing of treks with do's and don'ts.
Morning activities start after breakfast, where our city guide will accompany you to interesting World Heritage Sites in our wonderful sightseeing tour, which helps you to gain knowledge regarding local culture and traditional life of Nepalese people as it was for many past centuries.
Tour leads around Kathmandu Durbar Square teemed with local life around historical sites and monuments, then heading due west at Swayambhunath Stupa (popularly known as Monkey Temple where large numbers of monkeys are found around).
Morning transfer to the domestic airport as per your flight time for the short panoramic flight to land at Lukla, getting into a smaller aircraft (Twin Otter or Dornier) with 30 minutes on air with great views of Himalayan peaks includes Mt. Everest.
On reaching Lukla on its unique airstrip known as Tenzing - Hillary airport, from here a slow start with a few hours of walks downhill passing many Sherpa farm villages and well-tended crops and vegetable fields and terraces with views of Kwangde and Kusum Kanguru peaks.
After 3-4 hours on the first day walks reaching our overnight stop in a nice lodge at Phakding, transfer into your rooms with the sound of glacial Dudh Kosi River nearby.
Today is a long day to reach Namche Bazaar, starting with the gradual walk following the river upstream and crossing a few bridges to reach the Sagarmatha National Park entrance near Monjo village.
Sagarmatha for Everest in Nepalese and Sherpa call Chomolungma in both languages means 'Great Mother' from here a pleasant walk on the river bed and then climb for few hours into the forested trail with views of snow-capped peaks, as the walk reaches you at exciting town and village at Namche Bazaar.
A rest and a free day at Namche Bazaar for proper and necessary acclimatization at this great height of above 3,440 m high before heading higher ground, at Namche spend the day with a scenic hike around and browsing the streets and shops, Namche holds a colorful and busy Saturday Market every week.
After an enjoyable time with rest days at Namche Bazaar, the morning starts with uphill for a short time and then walking on the gradual winding path to Shanasa village.
From here our route diverts away from the main Everest base camp trail heading with a climb on quiet trails uphill towards Gokyo Lake.
As climbs start on steep up to Mong small village at 3,973 m high, located on a high ridge facing views of surrounding snow-capped mountain views, from here downhill to Dudh Kosi River to reach at Phortse Thanghka for lunch.
Morning walk from Dole with a climb along a side of the valley, where rhododendron forest fades for small bushes of juniper, walk gains altitude slowly.
Walking then on a level path for an hour to Lhabarma Kharka and Luza at 4,390 m high and then skirting around a ridge walking downhill to reach Machherma village.
From Machherma, our journey continues to reach the third Lake of Gokyo, the walk follows a scenic path to Pangka, a small area, and then follows one of the glacial-fed rivers which flow from Ngozumba Glacier and Mt. Cho-Oyu.
The walk leads to a climb by the side of a glacier, passing at first Lake and then second Lake, to reach the third biggest Lake called Dudh Pokhari or Gokyo Lake.
Around Gokyo Lake, with many good lodges facing a grand view of the Lake with the world's 6th highest Mt. Cho-Oyu and other range of peaks.
Early morning hike up to Gokyo Ri, a scenic hilltop at 5,357m for wide panorama facing views of Mt. Cho Oyo, Gyachung Kang, Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse, Taweche, and far as to Mt. Makalu towards the east.
After a grand view from Gokyo Ri, descend back to Gokyo for breakfast and lunch with the rest of the afternoon free at leisure or take a short walk of few hours
After the morning breakfast starts to walk around 5h plenty of downhill to dole when you reach at the camp nearly observe the view of amadevlom, Thamserku mountain view from dole 4200m.
Waking up early, you will be able to see a panoramic picture of sunrise kissing the snow-capped mountains of the Everest region. The way back to Namche is mostly downhill and easy. Trekking down the same way back offers the same beautiful views of local settlements along with the amazing Himalayan views, passing through many villages of the different ethnic groups of people offers a chance to explore their daily living lifestyle and traditional values. Overnight stay at Namche Bazaar.
On the final trekking day, you will follow the same way back via Dudh Koshi riverbank. In the evening, you can celebrate the successful trekking with the crews.
Say goodbye to the porters, then fly back to Kathmandu. You can do last-minute shopping. In the evening, enjoy the farewell dinner with our team.
You will be transferred to Kathandu international airport to catch your returning flight.
