Useful Info

Types of Safaris To Do In Bardiya

Jungle Safari: Bardiya National Park is home to several endangered animals and plants worldwide, making it the perfect destination for Jungle Safari. The jungle safari can be done either early in the morning with a short hike or following it in the evening.

The main motive for going on a jungle safari is for sightseeing activities, which are especially targeted at the Royal Bengal Tiger. These species of tigers are very rare in the world, with only an estimated 2500 remaining.

This national park also offers wildlife viewing activities like seeing wild rhinos, elephants, and multiple other animals. Bardia National Park, one of Nepal’s most diverse parks, has much to offer to tourists and locals who wish to explore and experience nature through a guided walk in the forest.

Our leisurely 3-5 hour walk starts in the early morning, with wildlife being most active, although it can double for those who would like to spend more time exploring. Unlike zoo visitors, spotting animals is seasonal, weather-dependent, and a bit of luck.

Nonetheless, our skilled guides will augment your chances of seeing animals often. However, we don’t walk all the time; much of our time in the wild is spent sitting and being silent at waterholes, riverbanks, and shelters for observation.

Jeep Safari: You might have seen the videos of people exploring wild animals from Jeep. This is the same thing you will do during your Bardiya Jungle Safari journey. Wild animals of the jungle are early risers, and we get up early to increase the possibility of sighting them. Before a light breakfast, we drive a few hours deep into the jungle by jeep. Your guide will escort you to areas where tiger spotting is most likely. Although there is no foal guarantee, you have a 90% chance of seeing a tiger in Bardia.

Listening carefully to jungle sounds, you may hear the alarm call of the monkeys who warn of the presence of the "king of the forest." This sound will tell you that he is on his way soon. The tiger is a solitary and territorial hunter; it does its hunting at night and is very difficult to notice during the day. So, if you are lucky enough to see one, it will be your life's best experience.

Besides, you can have close sightings of feral elephants, Indian One-Horned Rhinos, rare birds, and so on.

Elephant Safari: An elephant safari provides a unique possibility to see nature closely like no other experience. The stealthy appearance of elephants allows you to get within one meter without being observed by other animals. Elephants can take you to parts of the park that are not reachable by foot and bring you very close to huge animals like rhinos without disturbing them. The more time you spend on an elephant, the bigger the elephant, the higher the chances you'll see wildlife, so in a 2-3 hour ride, you are guaranteed to see the wildlife up close.

During the safari, you are always at the front accompanied by a rider, well-educated guides, and naturalists who look after your safety and make your experience memorable. Riding on the back of an elephant allows you to be that close to the wildlife, but it's essential to stay silent. Any sound could just as well frighten tigers, rhinos, deer, and other animals.

Extra Activities To Do

Rafting in the Karnali river

Being the longest and the largest, the Karnali River flows through the remote and unspoiled landscape of the far-western region. As such, rafters are exposed to unparalleled beauty and challenging rapids. A trip along this river through the lush green forests, the deep gorges and the traditional villages allows exploring Nepal's abundant natural and cultural heritage. Rafters will experience a variety of class III to V rapids mixed with calmer parts, allowing them to take in the serene beauty of their surroundings.

You will have our rafting guides to help you identify as many species of birds and others on the riverside as you can during the day excursion. It is widely known that elephants, deer, wild boar, and rhinos often visit the riverbanks to drink, and the chance to spot the endangered freshwater dolphins is a very coveted experience.

Visit the Elephant and Crocodile Breeding Center

A visit to the breeding center is a must for a crocodile enthusiast or someone who intends to study them. The center can be accessed from within and outside the park premises. Make sure to ask about the entrance fees. If you love the rare and one-of-a-kind gharial crocodiles, the zoo has a particular area where they are kept. Nevertheless, the tickets for this section are required, and they are also quite pricey.

Bardia National Park also includes a small Elephant Breeding Center located south of the park. This center is Chitwan National Park's analogue. There, you can see elephants of different ages. Certain elephants are deployed for anti-poaching patrols, while others serve for recovery from injuries and breeding. The elephant breeding center is open throughout the day, though there are designated visiting times for the best experience.

Bird Watching

The wide range of wild species has put Bardia on the map of birdwatchers, and now it is a paradise for them. The area is a habitat of egrets, black ibis, francolins, lesser whistling ducks, hornbills, kingfishers, warblers, and many other birds. For the most delightful experience, seek a jungle guide who is an expert in birdwatching, wildlife observation, and jungle activities. It's a must for you to make yourself acquainted with the birds beforehand. In Bardia, only a few guides are probably the ones who have the necessary bird spotting skills.

Visit the Tharu Cultural Museum

Immediately after the main gates of Bardia National Park, you will find the Tharu Cultural Museum. This museum exhibits the culture, traditions, history, language, and dress of the Tharu people. As well you can discover their agricultural tools and kitchen utensils. There is a small entrance fee, but the museum doesn't require the Bardia National Park ticket.

Boating And River Fishing

Many people enjoy boating on rivers around Bardia, delivering a very different perspective of the forest than you see while walking on foot. The animals rarely notice the boats, and you can see them in their natural behavior. However, boating can be expensive, and there is a possibility of meeting crocodiles in the water.

River fishing is one of the main recreational activities in Bardia, where fishers can catch golden mahseer and goonch. Obtaining permission before fishing and releasing all fish back into the river is vital. Fishing equipment can be rented for USD 10 per day.

Cultural Tours In Nearby Temples

The temples and shrines of various sizes are the trademarks of Thakurdwara. Although they have existed only briefly, the temples of Lord Shiva in Bardia are no less old as they carry a history that goes back to the very first days of this area. Tourists may visit the additional shrines and the main shrine as these remain free of charge. Most remarkably, the largest temple of Shiva in Nepal has made its unique design style. With the help of digital preservation 3D technology, the Digital Archaeology Foundation has preserved the venue in its unique nature.

When To Go for Bardiya Jungle Safari?

To enjoy the tour of the Bardia Jungle Safari to its fullest, we suggest you choose the time interval of autumn in the middle of September and November. This is the best time, with ideal weather, which is warm and wonderful for visiting but cool enough to give you comfortable sleep. The nice atmospheric conditions during autumn deepen your sense of relaxation and help you spot the wildlife due to the shorter grasses that make it easier to spot even the tiniest animals.

Not only that, but autumn also offers a great time to observe the natural beauty and the abundance of wildlife in the Terai region. The magnificent scenery, with vegetation everywhere, doubles your safari's fun. Conversely, the dense fog that prevails during the winter may cause great difficulties in vision and help the appearance of animals. On the other hand, summer is when the temperatures become very high; therefore, discomfort is ensured, and the risk of heat-related illness increases, consequently hindering your safari.

So, it is suggested that you visit the Bardia Jungle Safari Tour in the autumn season if possible, as that is the optimum and most enjoyable season. You will thus be assured of the best weather, comfortable conditions, and the highest likelihood of experiencing fantastic animal life in the area.
