You can expect to reach all the attractions of the entire region in this single trip, namely Kala Patthar, Everest base camp, Cho La Pass, Gokyo Lake, and Gokyo Ri. Below is more about what you can look forward to.

A Thrilling Flight:

The beginning of our wandering is the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla because, during its entire trajectory, you will find only mountains and lakes.

Reach the Namche Bazaar

We will then follow the riverbanks of Dudh Koshi from Lukla to Namche Bazaar, a centuries-old Sherpa marketplace.

Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp Exploration

Our trip will take us to the renowned Tengboche monastery, climb the Kalapatthar observatory point at 5.545 meters, and walk into Everest Base Camp.

Reach Gokyo After Passing Cho La Pass

We will also venture beyond base camp as part of our combined Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lake Journey. As outlined by Ngozumpa, we will visit the Gokyo zone and see some of its most picturesque lakes. We’ll even ascend the approach to Gokyo Ri after crossing one of the high passes of the Everest zone for potentially the best viewpoint in all of Khumbu.

Extend Trip to Gokyo From Mount Everest Base Camp After Traversing Cho La Pass

The extended trip from Mount Everest Base Camp to Gokyo Lakes with an extra hike through Cho La Pass was a daring journey. The Everest Base Camp Expedition, revered for its unsurpassable beauty, leads you to the heart of the Khumbu region, making it an adventure that lives in your memories.

Adorned with encounters with friendly Sherpa people, visits to old monasteries, and moments when you walk in the shadow behemoths (of the Himalayas). All the steps represent a kind of elegies to nature and man’s resilience.

The march to Gokyo Lakes widens the horizon of amazement that occurs throughout this adventure. The mountains seem endless and unreachable in this world of nonstop movement, but there is boundless beauty when you cross solitary mountain passes surrounded by gorgeous alpine vistas. The beautiful blue lakes that glitter in the morning sun make a wonderful image, and every uphill victory is paid with it.

Therefore, real bragging rights are associated with surviving one of the world’s toughest trails in the Himalayas. From the dynamic airstrip town of Lukla to exclusive peaks such as Kala Patthar and Cho La, every step in this Excursion can be likened to chapters that make up an exciting travel adventure story. First, you can complete this travel plan in only 17 days with guided expertise from Adventure Altitude Treks.

Mesmerizing Everest Gokyo Valley

Visiting Gokyo Lake makes all tourists feel great. This partly satisfies the desires of those who want to taste heaven on earth after passing through challenging cho la pass. Sometimes, it is not easy to arrive here because of fatigue and altitude, which may result in physical or psychological problems. However, for the splendor of isolated lakes with blue skies, white mountains, and empty valleys presented in The Gokyo Pass, Nepal is also famous for its Beautiful Lakes and the daunting pass – Cho La Pass.

As preparation for acclimatization, one should ramble to the Everest Base Camp before crossing the Cho La, which offers more opportunities to complete this walk. On the other side of Gokyo Valley, there are lovely lakes with blue skies. Apart from these astonishing mountain sights, a walk in the Gokyo Valley is among life’s most lovely and dangerous endeavors. It has pretty blue lakes and a majestic Gokyo peak that we will climb to witness the perfect sunrise.

Three Best Photographic Spots

During the stride between Everest Base Camp and Gokyo in Nepal, you come across three magnificent sites of photographic value: Gokyo Ri Summit, Tengboche Monastery, and Kala Patthar. The Everest Base Camp remains an iconic attraction from the entire journey.

At an elevation of 5,357 m above sea level, Gokyo Ri Summit provides a singular and picturesque view of the Himalayas. First, climbing Kalapatthar (5643 meters) provides breathtaking scenery warming up to the heart. At the height of 3,860 meters stands Tengboche Monastery, which adds a religious touch to the lofty majesty of the Himalayas.

While the appeal of those great heights against which the Himalayas cannot be challenged remains, other views are presented from different perspectives. The Everest base camp has been declared a captivating star highlight that attracts enthusiastic people blessed with popular glamor during the trip. Every site, chosen in a way so that each provides its distinct visual treat, guarantees to make our photographic tour part of a colorful assortment of different perspectives.

Acclimatization Hike: Everest View Hotel, Thame, Khunde

Name Bazaar is an ideal town for acclimation. That means that we have to occupy the whole day with exploration and acclimatization activities rather than being inactive. In Namche, one can have a small plod  to Everest View Resort, Thame, or Khunde. Also, while taking an acclimatization stroll, take it easy and enjoy what these locations offer.

Our acclimatization route will be through Everest View Hotel since we can climb onto the trail to the twin villages of Kunde, Khumjung, and Namche, which will be less crowded. Upon reaching the village, spectacular mountains like Ama Dablam and Mt Everest Thamserku, among other peaks, will be visible. These villages also serve as popular stay for trekkers to have lunch and stay overnight.

Acclimatization hike: Nagarjun Hill

Our bodies need one more day to adapt to the higher altitude, and we have reached this point on our Gokyo Everest itinerary. Naturally, the trekker’s catchphrase is ‘climb high and sleep low.’ This brings us to the two incredible vantage points of Nagarjun Hill or Chukhung Village in the morning before descending back into Dingboche by afternoon. These two-day hikes provide incredible views of Lhotse, Makalu, and Ama Dablam, which will be followed by a sunset over the windy peaks of mountains and stone walls of Dingboche that you will never forget.

The path we take today runs along the line of the valley northwest into Khumbu. We will be going uphill, taking the zig-zags of Everest Base Camp Trek to reach Thukla Pass. The pass is situated at roughly around 4,800 meters altitude, and the view here is just stunning, with amazing vistas of the Himalayas … all over. Here, there is a memorial for the mountaineers who died while trying to conquer the Himalayas. After paying our respects, we will start descending from this pass and proceed towards Lobuche. The village itself is an assortment of guest houses and kitchens, surrounded by wonderful Himalayan views.

Today is a big day! We start by trudging through Khumbu Glacier, a long and leisurely walk deep into the heart of mountains. This part of the Gokyo and EBC Excursion measures almost five miles, and some scree-covered slopes act as a barrier between us towards Gorak Shep. We will take a break to gather ourselves and continue our upward trek through the high Himalayan shell until we arrive at base camp.

When climbing in the mountain-climbing season, base camp is sure to be full of mountaineers and fellow climbers alike spreading joint force at Mount Earth’s highest point. With such majestic accomplishments and breathtaking feasts on our marvel landscapes, we will return to Gorak Shep, where there is waiting for us a good dinner before sleep.

Our trips to Khumbu do not end with your visit to Everest Base Camp. However, in reality, those views that you’ll get today standing on the highest altitude of Kala Patthar will overshadow any vista your eyes have ever seen during their whole life. We start our trip with a hike early in the morning, as it takes about 2 hours to reach Kala Patthar, where we can view the beautiful sunrise over the Himalayas. From Kala Patthar, we will walk downhill to pick up bags at Gorak She In around 4-5 hours of walking on that alley, we will arrive at the village, where we shall take much rest tonight to prepare for tomorrow’s difficult day, which will be a journey across Cho La mountain pass.

Another high-altitude destination awaits us this morning: With a strengthened breakfast, we’ll climb to the high pass of Cho La. This is the most challenging section of our EBC and Gokyo trek itinerary, as the flat valley quickly becomes a steep trip. During the hikes, we pause at times as we cross a glacial moraine and make our way to the pass, where struggle is rewarded with great Himalayan views that stretch into far distances. Now, we will cross the desert of giant peaks and bare mountains to reach Thangnak. Almost reaching close to the unbelievable Gokyo Lakes, we will rest here in Thangnak.

Lastly, we will reach the Gokyo Lakes. After our breakfast this morning, we will walk through a gray and brownstone landscape covered in fog for about three or four hours. All the same, when clouds that hugged mountaintops vanish under the glare of blistering sun, sweeps will be Himalayan peaks in unparalleled glory. Climbing further up the trail, we’ll see another ice cap before Gokyo – a village that will have you gasping for air. The Gokyo village stands on the sand and rocks close to Gokyo Tso, which can be regarded as an exceptionally wonderful spot among high-altitude lakes.

The adventure of today begins early – a march from Gokyo to the beautiful peak known as the finest viewpoint in Everest, i.e., towards Gokyo Ri. We aim to arrive at this spectacular mountain outlook close before daybreak, which is a three-hour hour ascent. The first light gradually discloses the breathtaking scenery with a gentle predawn warmth illuminating Himalayan peaks. Gokyo-Ri, one of the best viewing points in Nepal, offers dreams like setting shimmering ice blue Gokyo lakes in rays shining early morning sun. It highlights the Everest trek. We will move towards Dole after having breakfast in Gokyo, which is an hour's descent from there. Due to the difficult morning hike, a long stroll of four hours along Dudh Koshi River until Dole comes as an easy option.

The trail descends slowly to the flat ground from Dole. Following a nice stroll, we crossed the suspension bridge and passed many villages, among which Kyanjuma is one. In the alpine forest of pines and rhododendrons, we walk our way to the valley. Hence, the ascent is an easy one, and it offers a panoramic view of mighty mountains marching up to green hills dotted with sunny meadows. Namche is a beautiful town that we will finally get to after descending the hill along with Tibetan monasteries and Chortens for just a few minutes.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

While you embark on the Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC, you will be traveling through the landmarks that are within Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 1,148 sq km. This sanctuary is home to endangered species like musk deer, snow leopards, and the elusive Red Panda. The park is a gem of Nepalese biodiversity with a mission to conserve these creatures.

For your Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC, Entry Permits are mandatory as Sagarmatha National Park is a protected zone. Everest Adventurers must obtain permits before arrival to ensure a seamless and safe experience in these restricted areas.

After paying entry fees, embark on an awe-inspiring Excursion to conquer the Khumbu region, including the iconic Everest Base Camp and the challenging Three Passes.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit

The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit is a crucial authorization for adventurers, alongside the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit. It is necessary to ensure a smooth and successful Journeying experience. Implemented on October 1st, 2018, this permit replaced the old Trekkers' Information Management Systems (TIMS) Card.

Trekkers must pay a designated fee to obtain this permit, and without it, they cannot explore the scenic Khumbu region, including the renowned Everest Base Camp. It costs NPR. 2000 per person, which can be bought from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu.

Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit

If you're embarking on the Everest Base Camp trek in 2024 via the Jiri route, you must have a Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit. Permits for the Jiri route can be obtained from Shivalaya or the Tourism Board in Kathmandu.

Accommodation During Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC

During the Everest Base Camp Trek, you'll stay in comfortable teahouses, guest houses, or lodges with basic accommodations and meals. These include traditional Nepali dishes along with Western cuisine. You can also try authentic Nepali items like Dal Bhaat and Dhindo.

Here is a detailed overview of the accommodation facility in Everest Base Camp Trek:

Teahouses

Teahouses serve as the primary lodging option for Everest Base Camp trekkers. Found along the trail, these lodges offer basic amenities such as meals, drinks, and dorm-style rooms. While their quality may vary, teahouses generally offer a comfortable space for resting, recharging, and socializing with fellow excursionists.

Hotels

Towns along the trek, such as Namche Bazaar and Gorak Shep, provide hotels with comfortable rooms, hot showers, and Western-style toilets. While these accommodations offer more amenities, they tend to be pricier and less convenient than teahouses.

Meals During Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC

During the Excursion to the adventurous Everest Base Camp Trek, food and meals come as a crucial aspect. Since the trek is physically demanding, taking high energy and nutritious food is very essential. But can we get the food of our desire during this trek? This might be the question to many trekkers who are willing to travel to this destination.

Here, we will give comprehensive details about the available food around Everest Base Camp and the Gokyo Lake route.

There are varieties of food that can be accessible during the Everest Base Camp Trek. Most of the time, excursionists stay at a tea house, a basic accommodation service along the route. Trekkers can expect basic traditional Nepali dishes, including Dal, Bhaat, and Tarkari (curry) on these platforms.

Similarly, tea houses also serve several other dishes, such as momo (Chinese Dumplings), Dhindo, and others. The basic Nepali dishes cost around $2 to $5 per meal, which includes all of the above listed. But remember, the cost of these dishes can vary from one tea house to another.

Likewise, if you want to try Western meals and dishes, you will have numerous options during your stay at Namche Bazaar. Namche Bazaar, the Gate to Everest, is one of the most active towns in the Everest Region. There are several high-end hotels and restaurants, which serve the best dishes from all around the world. From fast food including Pizza and burgers to continental and others, excursionist can enjoy different varieties of meals during their stay.

Talking about the price, western dishes are a bit more expensive than traditional Nepali dishes. So, you must allocate your budget for food accordingly.

Best Time To Do This Trek

For optimal trekking in the Everest region, consider the Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) seasons. These periods offer favorable weather and excellent tourism opportunities in Nepal.

Spring Season

Spring offers pleasant weather and mild temperatures, making it the perfect time for the Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC. The lush forests of Nepal are in full bloom, enhancing the beauty of the landscapes. The only drawback is the potential overcrowding, but with advance bookings and preparations, you can manage it effectively.

Autumn Season

Autumn somehow mirrors spring in its pleasant weather and environment, featuring clear skies and moderate temperatures that make it easy to enjoy the surrounding beauty. While you embark on a trek to the Everest Region, you can expect the clear and crisp views of Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and Lhotse with additional beauty of Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri as well.

The weather conditions are moderate with less chance of rainfall and snowfall, making your journey enjoyable.

Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC During Off-Season

Off-season in Nepal includes the monsoon and winter seasons, which are way harsher than other seasons in terms of Journeying and tourism. Usually, off-season trekking to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lake is not recommended, but still, some of experienced and professional excursionists dare to take it.

We also do not recommend trekking during the off-season but if you intend to do so, please hire very professional guides and porters in your team. Having them with you will soothe your journey in terms of safety and navigation.

So, why don't we recommend an off-season outing to the Everest region? Let’s see it in detail:

Monsoon

Monsoon brings heavy rainfall in Nepal, including the Everest Region. So natural hazards like landslides and floods in the downstream are common. The navigation becomes more challenging due to wet trails and safety also becomes more pivotal because of the same reason.

The monsoon season comes during the summer season, so hikers should expect hotter temperatures than other seasons. If you are fond of natural wonders, then you will be wrong to travel during monsoon as the scenery will not be clear like Spring or Autumn season due to the cloudy environment.

Winter

Winter season starts at the end of November and remains until the end of February. During these months, the temperature drops below 0 Degree Celsius, bringing several challenges. Everest Region, being located in the Himalayan region, the temperature might drop to an even lower range.

Similarly, altitude sickness is most likely to be prone during this season. The main reason for this is extreme weather and temperature. Winter also brings challenges like heavy snowfall and avalanches, impacting access to the region.

Despite these difficulties, off-season outings are budget-friendly and less crowded in the Everest region.

Preparing for the Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC

The Everest Base Camp Trek is a renowned adventure in the Khumbu Region, which does not require any introduction. This classic trek spans from the capital city of Nepal to the highest viewpoint, offering a journey through picturesque green valleys, lush fields, and forests. Along the way, trekkers will find themselves delving into breathtaking views of mountains, glaciers, and valleys.

There are preparations that should be considered before embarking on this trek. Catering to a diverse range of excursionists, from beginners to seasoned professionals, the Everest Base Camp trek is classified as a moderate trek. To fully enjoy this Himalayan adventure, participants should possess a level of physical fitness, a sense of adventure, and a desire for an unforgettable experience in the majestic landscapes of the Everest region.

Physical Preparation

Trekkers must know that Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC is physically challenging. Since this trek is a multi-day Saunter, physical exhaustion is a sure shot. Walking for 5 to 6 hours is every day's routine for a couple of weeks during this journey.

So, your physical fitness level matters regarding Everest Base Camp Trek. It would be best to have enough strength and endurance for this Saunter. EBC lies above 5000 meters, and altitude sickness is prone to this level of altitude. So training yourself in altitude exposure and extreme weather conditions is also required.

Mental Preparation

As mentioned above, EBC Trek with Gokyo Lake is a physically challenging trek. So, it might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Excursionists must have prior experience with high-altitude trekking and should feature high-end physical fitness to try this.

On top of that, the extreme weather conditions of the Everest Region might be a nightmare. Not everyone has a strong mentality to beat it. Altitude Sickness & Issues

Altitude sickness is the major concern during the Gokyo Chola Pass Trekking via EBC. Everest Base Camp lies at 5,364 meters, while Gokyo Lakes also lie 4,700–5,000 meters above sea level. At such heights, the oxygen level is depleted and the air pressure is high. Due to this, breathing becomes challenging, which might bring several health hazards including altitude sickness.

Also, the temperature at such heights will be around 0 Degrees Celsius, which adds up to more risks to human health. Due to such aspects, trekkers are most likely to suffer from Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE), and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE).

Symptoms of Altitude Sickness:

  • Coughing up blood or mucus
  • Abnormal lung sounds
  • Extreme listlessness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Lips going blue
  • Disorientation, confusion, hallucinations, talking nonsense
  • Lack of coordination, staggering, inability to walk
  • Irrational behavior
  • Severe headache,
  • Nausea and vomiting

My Journey to Everest Base Camp

It was a great experience with adventure altitude treks to Everest base camp trek. For two weeks, we trekked through breathtaking scenery along the Everest Trail. The moment when I reached Everest Base Camp, which is at a height of about 5363 meters, could be described as surreal. An alternative hike to Kala Patthar, standing approximately 5550 meters above sea level, is provided for people interested in additional adventure. During the two weeks of trekking, we were lucky with good weather, making the trip more enjoyable. We were 14 people drawn from the UK, Iceland, the US, and Australia, which made the world flavor of this expedition.
