Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Tour Information

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is the holy, life-changing 10-day tour to Mt. Kailash in Tibet- is one of the most important pilgrimages for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers. We can tailor-make the itinerary according to your needs in a small group or with big participants around the world, including NRIs and travellers from the USA or any other country. It lies on the Nepal-Tibet border, and the most scenic overland route from Kathmandu is via Dhunche, Syabrubesi, or Timure.

The tour crosses over the Tibet border at Rasuwagadhi after performing all immigration procedures and then goes via Kerung and Saga, including appropriate stops for acclimatisation. Mt. Kailash towers to a height of 6,638 m above sea level and is considered the abode of Lord Shiva or Buddha Demchok. It lies near the origin of four important Asian rivers-namely the Brahmaputra, Sutlej, Indus, and Karnali. The attraction that Kailash has for mountaineers does not lie in its height but rather in the spiritual aspect; no climber ever did or would dare to summit the peak, adding to the mystique.

The 52-km Kora (Parikrama) around Mount Kailash is a spiritual and physical journey accomplished in three days. The trail takes you through some of the most breathtaking scenery on the planet and is physically demanding, with an average altitude of over 4,500m before reaching the highest point at the Dolma La Pass (5,860m). On this trek, we will visit Dirapuk Monastery and Milarepa’s meditation cave – both places steeped in old-time Tibetan Buddhist culture. We also make our way by jeep to Lake Mansarovar – said to cleanse one’s sins just by laying eyes upon it. We will return to Kathmandu from here using the same itinerary.

This trip is about splendid terrain coupled with rugged beauty.  This is for real adventure enthusiasts who don’t mind undergoing some physical discomforts while on holiday – due perhaps to too simple accommodation or staying in tents in remote locations away from modern development but never far from ancient civilization and always close to unspoiled nature.

Can Traveller Do Kailash Charan Sparsh and The Inner Kora – Nandi Parikrama?

Inner Kora – Nandi Parikrama Status 2025 and 2026

The Inner Kora is banned at the moment in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, as there was an incident; pilgrims are not allowed to do this tough and high-altitude trek anymore.

Charan Sparsh Status 2025 and 2026

Charan Sparsh is not banned and, therefore, the most reachable part of the pilgrimage. Charan Sparsh means touching Mount Kailash from a distance to connect spiritually with this holiest of holy mountains. If any pilgrim wants to do the Charan Sparsh, then they will have to inform their Tibetan guide in advance, and he will have to make arrangements for it. Most Pilgrims do it after leaving Darchen and starting the kora. Actually, one can also do a Charan Sparsh from day one of starting the kora as you leave Darchen early in the morning at about 5 AM. However, a Charan Sparsh can be done only as an offering when, by now, the pilgrims are relatively fit and good walkers as they still have to walk long that day. Since they cannot touch Mount Kailash literally, they make salutations from far, at least.

Nepali cooks accompany the pilgrims during their Yatra and prepare food for them using locally available supplies on a daily basis. These cooks are aware of how Indians like their spices and also know how important nutrition is at these high altitudes, so don’t shy away from serving proper nutritious hot meals all along your Yatra with clean utensils wherever possible.

Infrastructural constraints in the region mean guesthouses and restaurants are equipped with bare essentials. It is always a good idea for travelers to carry along some snacks to manage their dietary needs through the Yatra. Be it a small group or a large one, efficient Nepali cooks and guides at all times ensure travelers are well fed as this underpins both physical endurance as well as a spiritual high. Here is the detailed breakdown of Foods options on Kailash Yatra.

Accommodations Facility For the Tour

Kailash Yatra Package provides a wide choice of accommodation facilities, from comfort combined with the needs of a pilgrim/trekker to a spiritual atmosphere. The tour starts in Kathmandu, where the guests will be provided with hotels or guest houses with basic facilities like Wi-Fi, hot showers, and comfortable beds. Depending upon one's requirement, accommodation varies from budget motels to high-class hotels, most of them having dining facilities presenting both local as well as international cuisine. Amenities also include laundry services for comfort after a long day's travel.

Accommodation becomes gradually sparser on the tour but is adequate for the pilgrimage. In Kerung and Darchen, the guesthouses and lodges have clean rooms and simple beds with meals prepared in groups, which are warm and nourishing. Closer to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, pilgrims are accommodated in tented camps with spartan facilities. These have facilities with safe drinking water and dining halls with hot meal facilities; in addition, a provision is provided for traveller's spiritual discussions. Though the facilities available in these camps are very basic, the genuine hospitality of the local people makes travel all that rewarding.

Additional Notes

  • Single rooms are $200 extra with the package or 40-60-50 Yuan per night. This does not always involve food since different travellers have large variations in meal preferences.

Horses or Yaks Transportation to Complete the Kailash Parikrama

Transport Arrangement at Mansarovar (Day 1)

On reaching Mansarovar, Yaris has to inform the guides about their transport requirements for the Parikrama. The number of persons requiring horses must be clearly indicated, as the number has to be registered with the local transport association. Registration not done at Mansarovar may mean no vehicle is available at a later stage.

Journey Starts to Darchen (Day 1-afternoon time)

The pilgrims, after lunch at Mansarovar, travel a distance of 40 km to reach Darchen. This journey to Darchen is, in many ways, the preparatory journey for the main Parikrama. The overnight stay at Darchen also gives the pilgrims an opportunity to rest and prepare themselves for the sacred journey ahead.

Preparation at Yama Dwar (Day 2 Morning)

The horses booked in advance through the association are made available at Yama Dwar. The Tibetan guides provide all sorts of briefings relating to:

  • Halts en route
  • Arrangements regarding accommodation
  • Safety Protocols
  • General Instructions for the Parikrama

Cost Considerations:

The cost of transportation for the Parikrama is pretty high, and one needs to budget seriously for this:

  • Cost of Hiring horses: CN¥350 US$ 52 per animal per day
  • Yak keeper/horseman: CN¥300 US$ 44 per person per day.
  • Extra payment for the return journey of animals and handlers.

Points to Note:

  • All arrangements need to be finalized at Mansarovar. Pre-booking is strongly advisable to ensure availability.
  • Costs include Parikrama days and also return costs.
  • Logistics are all arranged by Tibetan guides through the local transportation association.

Traveling in a group includes guide services provided by the Tibetan government and managed through the permit issuance process. If traveling individually, you'll be assigned a Tibetan guide by the government for CN¥ 500–800 per day. Porters may also assist in carrying personal luggage. These services are included in most group travel packages but should be confirmed in advance. Hiring guides ensures smooth navigation and cultural insights during the yatra. Prepare to adhere to the group's travel plan to avoid unnecessary expenses for separate arrangements.

Travel Insurance for Kailash Yatra

Travel insurance is applicable only on the Nepal side, covering up to Kerung. In Nepal, Kailash Mansarovar's travel insurance costs approximately NPR 3,600, which covers accidents, health issues, and cancellation of the trip. According to them, no insurance covers an incident in Tibet because Tibet doesn't provide any receipts against insurance claims. Any limitations should be duly understood and planned for accordingly. Reliable insurance up to the Nepal border for basic safety and financial protection is quite necessary while trekking in these isolated and difficult parts of the terrain.

Cost for Trekking Gears, Carry Animals, and Porters

Travelers need to bring personal trekking gear like clothing and boots. For heavy loads, hiring yaks or horses is recommended. Yaks can carry 30-40 kg each, but they must follow others as they lack nose rings. Each yak man manages three yaks, and hiring at least two yaks is necessary, even for light loads. Basic camping equipment like tents and sleeping bags may be provided by your travel agency. Proper preparation ensures you are equipped to handle high altitudes and rugged terrains without overburdening yourself.

    An Unforgettable Spiritual Journey

We went to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which was an amazing experience. We were taking a trip from the USA . The adventure altitude treks made all the arrangements that included everything, be it traveling, food, or stay. We had planned to come along with one of our friends from Nepal as well, which made our journey more memorable. The team took care of us at higher altitudes and gave us a briefing on each step, which helped us prepare mentally. Going around mount Kailash feels like half the work done for connecting to god. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a mixture of both spiritual and adventure.
