ABC Helicopter Tour Starting Points in 2025, 2026

Kathmandu

  • Altitude: 1400m
  • International airport hub
  • Cultural and historic capital
  • Gateway to all Nepal trekking regions
  • Flight or road to Pokhara

If you choose Kathmandu as your starting point your trip will begin in Kathmandu, which is the capital of Nepal and the center of its culture. When you arrive at Kathmandu you will be taken to your hotel to get some rest and allow you to acclimatize. We reserved the first day for some down time and a briefing about your trek.

You might like to visit a couple of the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Durbar Square or Swayambhunath Stupa. The following morning, you'll either take a short domestic flight or drive to Pokhara, the gateway to the Annapurna region - this is where the journey of trekking will continue for you. Kathmandu is a fun city full of culture and history, mixed with modern life - it's the perfect place to begin your trek.

Pokhara

  • Altitude: 822m
  • Gateway to Annapurna region
  • Lakeside city with mountain views
  • Domestic airport for flights to/from Kathmandu
  • Starting point for ABC trek

If your trek starts in Pokhara, you'll be able to enjoy this funky lakeside town before heading to the mountains.

Pokhara has breathtaking views of Annapurna and Machapuchhre, and it's an easy-going spot with cafes, shops, entertainment and promenades along the lakeside.

You will spend one day acclimatizing, sightseeing and checking out Pokhara - after which you'll be taken by jeep or private vehicle to Siwai or Nayapul, where your trek will start. You'll walk here through great villages and lush forests on your way to Annapurna Base Camp.

Trekking from Pokhara is a nice option because you will have the opportunity to acclimatize as you transition into nature and culture.

Is 8 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return Right for You?

Your trekking experience, fitness level, time frames, and comfort level will help you determine if the 8-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return is right for you.

  • Trekking experience: This trip is classified as moderate and does not involve technical climbing. The 8-day version is suitable for experienced trekkers and first-time trekkers who have done multi-day hikes (or longer) before. With a helicopter return option, this does take away the physical requirement, it is more suited for a first-time trekker looking for a higher comfort level.
  • Fitness Level: You will need to be reasonably fit because each day, you can expect anywhere between 5-7 hours of walking mixed terrain (uphill and downhill). It will not be completely exhausting, but you will require some level of stamina and endurance to enhance your enjoyment of the experience.
  • Altitude Considerations: There are high elevations at Annapurna base camp; the highest elevation that people had accumulated was at 4130 meters (13550 ft). Your possible chance of getting altitude sickness is reduced if it is a trek to a higher point. You should be aware of altitude sickness symptoms to take it easy and to always ascend higher gradually. The helicopter flight home helps to avoid extended exposure to altitude.
  • Budget Consideration: Even though this itinerary contains the luxury of a helicopter flight, it is still a cheap option considering the time saved to do the trek and the unique experience. Adventure Altitude Treks can work with you and customize the package according to your budget needs.
  • Time Considerations: If you are limited on time but still want to see the beautiful Annapurna landscape, this trek is an excellent opportunity. You will have the full experience of trekking without the commitment of a long duration.

How to Prepare for Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return: 10 Tips by Our Expert Guide

  1. Begin exercising early: Begin any form of exercise (or at least a walking routine) at least a few months prior to your trek. You want to work on your endurance for long walking days, so include some type of cardio workouts such as hiking, jogging, climbing stairs, etc.
  2. Build strength and endurance: When doing your strength training workouts include squats, lunges, push ups, and core work to condition your body for an unbalanced surface.
  3. Hike with a backpack: Get used to carrying a weighted backpack. This will help build balance as well as endurance under conditions that you will encounter while on the trek.
  4. Proper acclimatization: Give your body time and opportunity to acclimatize to high altitudes. You can do this by walking to high altitudes (or walking slowly) and drinking lots of fluids. Pay attention to the symptoms of sickness at altitude.
  5. Hydrate: Drink lots of water while you trek to help your body deal with the physical exertion and altitude change.
  6. Pack wisely: Pack layered clothing to deal with temperature changes, insulated jackets, boots, and rain gear. You might want to consider using a porter to help with bringing your heavier items.
  7. Plan Ahead: Be aware that there may be physical challenges and unexpected weather changes and be prepared and have a good mindset when they do. The best way to handle this is to have confidence in your guide/trip leader while actively following their lead if decisions need to be made about your health and safety on a trek.
  8. Choose the Right Season: Make sure you are trekking in either spring or autumn, where seasonal and health conditions are more likely to suit you to get the best possible viewpoints of the mountains.
  9. Check Your Health: This goes without saying; do have a health check-up prior to the trek, and always take a basic first aid kit and supply of medication to suit your criteria.

Accommodation

While on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return, you will mainly be in local tea houses and lodges along the Annapurna Base Camp trek. People will generally be in a simple but comfortable room at local tea houses with beds, blankets, and often private toilets and possibly hot showers at the most popular stopovers (Chhomrong, Dovan and Deurali).

Still, at the Annapurna Base Camp, you may have basic lodges with very limited facilities, but with astounding views of the mountains.

While in Pokhara and Kathmandu, you are accommodated at hotels ranging from budget to luxury hotels with full comforts of modern amenities for a restful stop before & post-trek. The mix of staying in teahouses to rest your head at night while being able to experience the comforts of hotels has blended the experience of trekking with the comforts of a hotel so you can use your energy on the trek.

Foods

You will be eating traditional Nepali meals on the trek, including dal bhat (lentil soup and rice), vegetable curries and momo (dumplings). Most teahouses also offer Western items such as pasta, noodles and omelettes. Breakfast will typically be porridge, eggs or toast, while lunch and dinner will be some type of a hearty, warming meal to comfort and replenish your body for trekking at high-altitude.

In Pokhara and Kathmandu there are greater options available regarding cuisines and international food.

The best part about eating on the trek is that all your meals will be freshly made, typically using ingredients from the local market, providing you with some nutritious fuel for each day of hiking.

Drinks & Beverages

Tea (black, green, or herbal) and coffee are in abundance along the trail and are lovely beverages to warm up with in the cold mornings and nights.

Fresh fruit juices and soft drinks are widely available in larger villages, too. Alcohol is present but generally expensive and has minimal availability at higher elevations (for example, local raksi (rice wine) and beer).

Water

Having access to safe drinking water is very important when trekking. You can buy bottled water in just about all teahouses, but we recommend  water purification methods or tablets so that you can treat tap or stream water.

Most tea houses offer boiled or filtered water for their guests for a small price.

Safety During the Hike

Safety is the main consideration on any Annapurna Base Camp trek. The first thing is to make sure you are travelling with a qualified and trained guide who has experience of the trail and is aware of both the risks involved and the types of dangers associated with altitude sickness. You must watch your health closely and, more importantly, watch for any signs or symptoms of altitude sickness.

If you do experience any symptoms of altitude sickness you must inform your group immediately. Follow your planned itinerary and don’t rush anywhere. The fact that you are travelling slowly will determine the level of discomfort you experience while getting acclimatized.

You must wear good trekking boots and carry essential items such as a first aid kit, warm weather clothing, plus rain precautions.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is strongly recommended and generally a requirement for trekking in Nepal. Make sure that issues surrounding high-altitude recreation, helicopter evacuation, medical emergencies, and trip cancellation are covered in your policy.

Helicopter returns also provide an additional safeguard for your trek by allowing a more rapid return if necessary.

If you choose to trek, you should find out the extent of your insurance before you leave home, and keep copies of the emergency numbers close at hand.

FAQs
  • No previous trekking experience at altitude is required, but a good level of fitness is recommended. You should also try to train in advance with some hikes or cardio that will increase comfort & confidence.

  • Yes, you will be going up to altitude (4,130m), so there may well be a chance of altitude sickness. The schedule permits gradual ascent and acclimatization as well as guides trained to watch out for any signs of ill health.

  • Yes, assessments for helicopters would also include medical evacuations arising from an emergency. It is part of your travel insurance to have emergency coverage with airlift services.

  • You can either join the group on a fixed departure or arrange a private trek. Group treks will help to reduce the overall cost per person.

  • The trek can be organized between 1 & 2 persons. Group rates will apply for three or more trekkers.

  • If the helicopter holds up due to weather conditions, normally, flight travel delays are only a few hours or one day. You would be staying in tea houses nearby during these delays.

  • Most agencies will take online payments, bank wired transfers or cash in Kathmandu/Pokhara. It's normal to ask for a deposit to confirm your booking.

  • Cancellation policies differ from one agency to another, but as a standard, once booked, you will receive the balance back if canceled well in advance. Major last-minute cancellations may not be refunded; however, it is normally because an airplane or helicopter and permit have been secured.

  • Some villages also have wi-fi service for a small fee, but signals may weaken at the higher altitudes. However, you're probably just better off to unplug and enjoy the wilderness.

  • Yes, you can charge it capped, and may be charged. A powered bank or electric solar charger is a better alternative.

  • Yes, tipping is highly regarded. Generally, around 10-15% of the total trek cost is the pooled recommended amount to provide for the guides and porters.

The 8-day trek took us through beautiful villages, rhododendron forests, and up to the stunning 4,130m altitude of the base camp. The gradual ascent helped us adjust to the altitude comfortably. The best part? Returning by helicopter! Soaring over the Himalayas gave a bird’s-eye view of what we had accomplished. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and supportive, making sure everyone was safe and enjoying themselves. This is the perfect trek for those seeking a real adventure with a touch of luxury at the end.
