Kathmandu Valley and It's 7 UNESCO Heritage Sites

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is home to several old and famous temples, palaces, brick-paved alleyways, and awe-inspiring streets in the valley. The city is in the valley, yet the beautiful Langtang and Ganesh Himal can be seen here.

Kathmandu Durbar Square: Malla and Shah King Residence

On Seven World Heritage Kathmandu Tour Kathmandu Durbar Square is a first place you visit. The complex is a historic spot where the kings of the ancient Malla dynasty used to hold coronations and govern Kathmandu. In April 2015, the earthquake caused severe damage. Meanwhile, the sites are still stunning. Kathmandu Durbar Square is known for its handicrafts, Kumari Ghar, the home of Nepal’s young living goddess “Kumari,” her idol, Hanuman Dhoka, and various Nepalese craftsmanship. Durbar Square is as famous as Basantapur. It is approximately a half to one hour walk south of Thamel central business district in the capital city of Kathmandu.

Swayambhunath Temple: A Symbol of Harmony Blending Hinduism and Buddhism

Lying 4 km from Thamel, there is an ancient temple called Swayambhunath atop a hill. The monkey temple is called this because many monkeys are seen in the area. You can see them roaming freely in the temple's surroundings. It is a Buddhist and Hindu-based temple.

Pashupatinath temple: Navigating Life's Cycle

It is among the country's most important Hindu temples, situated on the banks of the Bagmati River. The origin of Pashupatinath temple is revealed to be dated for a very long time, and the temple shape is in traditional pagoda style. More than one thousand devotees will get together on the Shivaratri festival at Pashupatinath Temple, a festival devoted to Lord Shiva. Below the temple is the cremation site where many dead bodies are burnt according to the Hindu rituals.

Boudhanath Stupa: 'Great stupa of the dew drops’

Boudhanath is Asia's largest and oldest stupa, located 7 km east of Kathmandu. Boudhanath Stupa is an important Buddhist site which attracts people mainly from Tibet. The surrounding area is permeated with Tibetan traditions and customs. The majesty and purity of the Boudhanath Stupa are starkly different from the stupas in Nepal. A stupa (more than 2,000 years old) that has not been disturbed for the last 2000 years was reconstructed to reach its present glory 500 years ago. The eyes of the two Buddhas are painted on those days' stupa to mean that the Buddha exists everywhere.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square: Palace of Malla kings of Nepal

Bhaktapur city, where the Bhaktapur Durbar Square is located, is known for its fine handicrafts and pottery. This durbar square was the palace of Malla kings like Ranjit Malla. The surrounding square of Bhaktapur is filled with temples built in Pagoda and Shikhara Style. Bhaktapur Durbar Square’s main attractions include the Dattatreya Temple, Lion Gate, Golden Gate, 55-window palace, an image of King Bhupatindra Malla, and the multistoried Nyatapola Temple.

Patan Durbar Square: Marvel of Newar Architecture

Patan Durbar Square is a perfect destination in Patan, Lalitpur, to visit. In the mediaeval period, it was the palace of Mallas. Jagat Narayan Temple, Bhimshen Temple, Krishna Temple 21 golden pinnacles are a few of the heritage sites in Durbar Square. Similarly, the food stalls around the durbar square provide a local taste of the Nepali cuisine. No traveller can overlook Patan because it resonates with numerous mediaeval temples/shrines and their intricate carvings, which are just astonishing.

Changunarayan Temple: Marvel Built in Licchavi Dynasty

The Temple of Changu Narayan, built in the Lichhavi dynasty in the 2nd century, is among the oldest surviving temples in Nepal. There are sculptures of ten Maha Vishnu incarnations in the innermost chamber. Several stone lions guard all four temples’ entrances. Garuda, a part-man, part-bird vimana, is seen as Vishnu's vehicle. (Ujijana) The stone of Garuda bowing in worship can be seen in the west front of the temple. The inscription provides invaluable insights into the Licchhavi dynasty, which constitutes a stage in the growth of Kathmandu Valley. The images of Krishna Blue (Bhupatindra Malla) and his queen are found on the canopies on the detailed cages in the upper entrance part of the temple.
