After leaving our hotel, the first UNESCO heritage site we visited was Swayambhunath Temple, which is famous as the Monkey Temple. One of the greatest masterpieces of architecture in Kathmandu Valley is Swayambhunath Stupa, which has a golden spire embedded with a Buddha's face that survived the 2015 earthquake with minor damage. It is simultaneously rich in symbolism as its white dome stands for the earth, whereas its thirteen tower tiers represent the stages of nirvana. The one below Buddha's eyes, the Nepali numeral Ek, means unity; above that, the third eye reminds us of enlightenment. Pilgrims walk around the stupa while spinning prayer wheels that carry the mantra, ' Om Ma Ni Phi Hum.' Sent on fluttering prayer flags with mantras, the wind horse flies to heaven. 

Festivals Around Swayambhunath 

Three main festivals are celebrated at Swayambhunath: Gunla, Buddha Jayanti, and Lhosar.

• Gunla marks the end of the monsoon retreat, which is celebrated in August with scripture recitations and Newar music.
• Buddha Jayanti honors Buddha's life, enlightenment, and death between April and May.

Kathmandu Durbar Square- Second Attraction We Explore

It is an accumulation of three interlocking squares, including Basantapur and Hanuman Dhoka, where history and trade come together with souvenir stalls or a Freak Street. 

The house of goddess Kumari, or the Kumari Ghar, is on the south side of the Kathmandu Durbar Square premises. The Kumari Ghar was the palace of the House of Nepal, built by King Jaya Prakash Malla, which is an example of splendid architecture with delicate wood carvings of gods and other symbols.

Kathmandu Durbar Square annually celebrates two main festivals, Indra Jatra and Kumari Jatra. 

• Indra Jatra is a vast religious street festival with lively masked dances. 
• The festival of Kumari Jatra involves the procession of a living goddess, Kumari, who rides in a chariot. The celebration lasts eight days, from the 12th day of the bright fortnight to the 4th day of the dark fortnight of Yala. 
• The Indra Jatra festival originated in the 10th century, and the Kumari Jatra occurred a little later, in the mid-18th century.

Boudhanath Stupa: Third UNESCO Site We Visit

Boudhanath or Boudha is the next site we visit. It is one of the most sanctified stupas in Nepal, situated in Kathmandu, where Buddha’s relics are held. With a vast mandala design, it has become one of the largest spherical stupas in the world. It’s a popular tourist destination that has been listed as a Heritage Site under the UNESCO World Wide List since 1979. It originated from 600 AD and was provided by a Tibetan king, adding kilograms of gold. The stupa's architecture includes earth, air, water, fire, and space. Boudha is a spiritual sanctuary where Buddhist pilgrims circumambulate, chanting ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ while praying and seeking blessings within its boundaries.
