The Yatra package you are purchasing is structured to give you a relatively easy itinerary that starts you off on the planning process for a successful pilgrimage from the UK to Tibet, meaningful in spiritual worship, and an adventure in the Himalayas.

This compact pilgrimage package usually begins with your travel from the UK to Kathmandu. After spending upwards of 12-15 hours flying to reach Kathmandu, you will spend a couple of nights completing visa formalities and orientation, and visiting perhaps one or more of the spiritual sightseeing locations in Kathmandu, such as Pashupatinath and Boudhanath Stupa.

Again, as mentioned, for travelers departing from the UK, the traveller sequence begins when you fly to Kathmandu, Nepal, where a member of our service team will greet you.

After some spiritual and logistic activities help prepare you for the journey, we will depart Kathmandu and apply our pilgrimage travel measures to arrange travel to the sacred sights, including a scenic flight from Kathmandu to the Nepal-Tibet border land area, and then manage the overland travel arrangements.

Mount Kailash is sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon religion, all celebrate Mount Kailash as the center of the universe. Pilgrims travel great distances on foot to walk around (Kora) Mount Kailash to wash away sins or to obtain enlightenment. Lake Mansarovar, the beautiful blue lake at the base of Mount Kailash, is also sacred and is said to cleanse your soul.

This 10-day travel package includes acclimatization days, local sightseeing and a sacred Kora experience. Accommodations will be comfortable, and you will have plenty of food, you will be supported by adequate staff and enough oxygen reserves to have a safe, sustainable, and enjoyable experience even at high altitude!

This program is for the traveler with a better use of "time" than pilgrimage and travel for spiritual study, or anyone interested. You will receive serviceable abilities that are routines, guided tours, permits for entry, transport, and meals. For travelers, individuals or groups, any way you want to travel, this is a spiritually savvy experience.

By selecting the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from the UK, you have granted yourself a great opportunity to embark on a truly unique, transformative, and once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to the Himalayas along with countless others like you, who are looking to discover the magic and spiritual evasiveness of Mount Kailash.

Kailash Parvar Yatra Acclimatisation Strategy: UK Pilgrims in High Altitude Trek

UK trekkers are physically fit, with a strong commitment to outdoor culture and activities based on a rich variety of terrains available in the UK.

There is definitely no true high-altitude environment. However, commitment and awareness of physical fitness-based outdoor activities do provide a solid base for capability for high-altitude treks.

There is a lot less difficulty, i.e., fewer constraints of having natural high altitude exposures. However, it does mean that UK trekkers will have to really focus in terms of cautious, and rational acclimatisation when trekking in places like the Himalayas.

Adventure Altitude Treks focuses on high-altitude trekking so as to, in turn, provide an acclimatisation capability for British trekkers for high-altitude treks such as the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Below are some areas especially related to our service:

  • Gradual Ascent: A gradual ascent means there will be a limit on the elevation gain, a limit of not more than 300 meters gain daily after 3,000 meters, so that it is possible to gradually allow the body to acclimatise.
  • Rest Days: We will provide rest days during the course at ideal locations for acclimatisation, so we are trying to lessen conditions in which altitude sickness would develop.
  • Hydration and Nutrition: It cannot be stressed enough, good hydration and nutrition are key components in the acclimatisation process.
  • Monitoring and Support: Expert monitoring for early warning signs to try and prevent altitude sickness situations from starting. The better the support you have for early detection certainty and the more reliable the treatments will be conducive to effective outcomes.

These areas of acclimatisation help make it possible and safe for UK trekkers to acclimatise properly in high-altitude treks.

On your first day, you arrive at Kathmandu (1,400 m), the cultural heart of Nepal. After clearing customs, you will get a warm welcome at your hotel in Thamel.

For dinner, have a taste of the romantic Mezze by Roadhouse, which is located in the green courtyard and serves Mediterranean cuisine that is an excellent choice for a first meal to help you get used to the altitude. The food is simple and filling, and the atmosphere is mellow, which helps you relax.

This day also involved a leisurely tramp through Thamel’s narrow passages.

Maybe you can get a croissant and coffee at Himalayan Java prior to check-in. Even though jet lagged, the scenery of the green hills and snow-capped mountains in the distance still evokes the image of the upcoming trip.

As you walk along prayer flags, the shade of colors gently touches you after passing the Garden of Dreams, which used to be a neo-classical era park and is now a place perfect for digestion and light exploring of its beautiful surroundings. The garden’s ponds and fountains are peaceful despite the city’s rhythm being very close. A quiet night wraps up your arrival nicely.

Early in the morning, after having breakfast in your hotel, the guide from Adventure Altitude Treks takes you on a cultural sightseeing tour around Kathmandu.

At 8:00 AM, the eight-hour journey takes you first to Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal, where pilgrims walk clockwise around the vast white dome and spin prayer wheels as they chant "Om Mani Padme Hum".

Lastly, you visit Pashupatinath Temple, a very holy Hindu place that is situated on the banks of the Bagmati River. You will have some glimpses of the cremation rituals and view the temple’s beautiful pagoda-style architecture, which is loaded with spiritual energy.

Lastly, you go to Kathmandu Durbar Square, which is also called Basantapur Durbar Square. It is the place that houses the old royal palace, the temples of carved wood, and Kumari Ghar – the residence of the Living Goddess.

Your guide tells you of the Newari craftsmanship and rich heritage. In the evening, you are back at the hotel with vivid memories of Kathmandu’s spiritual and architectural treasures.

Breakfast at the hotel early in the morning, then go to Swayambhunath Stupa once more to see the morning sunlight reflecting on the golden spires. Flocks of pigeons fly all around it. The path from the town is paved, a smooth climb that gives you valley panoramas.

After that, drive to Patan Durbar Square at around noon. Have lunch at a rooftop café that faces the historic palace complex. Here, the Buddhist Krishna Temple, stone idols, and woodwork that is very detailed will be the only things you are going to look at. The streets are cobbled, which makes it easy to walk around them.

Next, a short car ride takes you to Bhaktapur Durbar Square, where the terracotta is very old. Do the best you can to enjoy the local 'juju dhau' yogurt and walk around Pottery Square.

A dinner at a restaurant in the courtyard is like history telling you a story, the story of old Bhaktapur, lighted by the glow of the lantern. The soft light on the temples and the palace's front parts turns the atmosphere into one that is almost magical.

Evening quiet broken only by the soft sound of the river from Bhote Koshi. At 2,000 m, the stars have a crisp and immense feeling. That night, the trail prepares your body and mind for the crossing of the next day.

After having a hot Nepalese breakfast (porridge and tea), you traveled along the rough parts of Trishuli Corridor (NH42) to the border. A few kilometres outside Dhunche, the jeep was struggling on the rocky sections and potholes.

Eat lunch at a local lodge in Rasuwagadhi. After you finish the border formalities, cross to Tibet and get to Kerung (Gyirong). A Tibetan guesthouse dinner with rustic stew and tsampa in a communal dining room is the setting.

The evening light illuminates prayer flags as the day is still above 2,850 m. Kerung Town has a peaceful charm. Tibetan hymns are softly heard across the windows. It really is a very peaceful end before the journey to the high plateau tomorrow.

Lunch is at a roadside teahouse near Shiquanhe (Ali) or smaller villages. Noodles and bread are good for refueling. Then continue crossing barren alpine pastures where yaks graze under snow-capped ridges.

On arriving at Saga, check into a hotel. Tibetan bread, butter tea, and yak meat stew will be the dinner.

At 4,540 m, the night sky is very clear. Altitude takes effect, but you are well ready for the Lake journey tomorrow, being acclimatized.

Reach Lake Mansarovar by late afternoon. Dinner at the lakeside lodge will consist of Tibetan-style steamed buns, local vegetables, and sweet butter tea.

The turquoise lake that mirrored the snow peaks was an unforgettable sight that perfectly fit the spiritual theme of this trip.

Breakfast at the lodge is early, followed by a visit to the holy shores of Mansarovar Lake. Pilgrims, barefoot and from the moment of sunrise, begin their rituals at Mansarovar, and you'll notice rejoicing pilgrims and monks draped in colorful robes walking around the blue waters.

In the mid-morning, a short drive turns into a drive to Darchen, passing Chui Gompa, a monastery in the shadow of Mt Kailash.

Lunch at a Tibetan guesthouse consists of barley soup and dumplings. The roads are flat and fairly easy to travel, although dust.

While wandering through Darchen, you will get views of Mount Kailash, peer into the distance one more time, pyramid-shaped with an imagery snowy cap against the blue sky. Back at the guesthouse for dinner, you have yak cheese and noodle soup.

You stop at a halfway teahouse for lunch, where noodles and dal are a good source of energy. The afternoon walk reveals the panoramic view of the ridges.

In the late afternoon, you get to the Dirapuk monastery. After you have taken your room, you can have dinner at the guesthouse: yak stew, Tibetan bread, and butter tea. You will be sleeping while the wind is blowing under the clear and high sky at an altitude.

Wake early for a light breakfast, then set off for the toughest stretch: from Dirapuk climb up to Dolma La Pass (about 5,643–5,650 m). The steep “hell slopes” of loose gravel and high altitude demand care and stamina. After reaching the summit, you’ll see Gauri Kund and a sea of fluttering prayer flags.

Mid‑day, enjoy a packed or teahouse lunch near the pass before descending. The 22 km trek takes 8–9 hours, including a steep descent. By afternoon you arrive at Zuthulphuk Monastery, around 4,790 m. Dinner of barley soup, momos and butter tea is served at the guesthouse. The evening is quiet, with views of Kailash behind the monastery.

As you go down towards Kerung (≈2,850 m), the air gets denser. A vegetable stew, along with Tibetan tea, is provided for dinner at the guesthouse. The journey is finally over with a restful sleep after the long and winding ride.

When is the Best Time to Travel to Kailash From the UK?

Spring Season: Late April to June

From late April to June is generally considered the best time for a pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash. Besides the snow melting, the roads are clear, and the day temperatures rise to about 12 °C–18 °C.In early April evenings can be chilly, so the layers need to be multiple.

And the traveler will enjoy less noise from the anticipated summer influx of visitors. The Saga Dawa Festival, is the main offering, likely in May or June, and provides lots of spiritual sustenance and memory-inducing local experiences.

Summer Season: June to August

June to August is the busiest time for the Kailash Yatra. The daytime temperature can be anywhere from 10 °C to 20 °C, and the nights are rather mild. The Tibetan plateau is generally dry during this time, whereas the Nepal side may get some sporadic showers, but nowhere near as much as in the southern parts.

This, in turn, makes the vegetation flourish, but at the same time, the route may have some landslides due to the rains. Full‑moon departures around Saga Dawa are considered spiritually auspicious but also bring higher demand.

Autumn Season: September to Early October

After the monsoon, the time period from September to the first week of October brings clear skies, unchanging weather conditions, and great visibility of the mountains. Daytime highs linger around a comfortable 10 °C–18 °C, but the nights can be very cold (below 0 °C).

Trails will not be as busy as in the summer, which means it is perfect for those who like to move at a slower pace. Photographers are the ones who love this period the most, as they can capture great high‑altitude views together with the colorful terrain.

Winter season is characterised by severe cold (-15 °C to -30 °C), heavy snowfall, gales, and often border-area closures. Most of the trekking trails and facilities are closed, hence it is very dangerous and inconvenient to travel during this time of the year.

Generally, the most practical way to reach and do the pilgrimage of Mount Kailash‑Mansarovar Yatra from the UK involves flying to Kathmandu and staying in comfortable accommodation there before going on the overland trek.

In Kathmandu, you'll usually stay in a four‑star hotel popular choices include Hotel Himalaya or Hotel Tibet on a twin‑sharing basis with bed & breakfast.

Next, after the arrival and permit processing, the overland journey goes on through Nepal to the Kyirong border and then to Tibet.

Lodging for your time in isolated places like Saga, Darchen, and Mansarovar is basic, in guesthouses or mud-house lodges, mainly shared with your team and more than often with local (Tibetan-style) facilities.

List of all Visas and Permits Required for Kailash Yatra Trip From UK 10 Days

Chinese Group Visa

In order to travel to Tibet, you'll need to obtain a Chinese Group Visa. Tibet is the one place on this Earth that doesn't have individual visas attached to it – only group visas when you are traveling together.

When you go to get your visa, the tour operator you are doing your itinerary with will apply on your behalf to the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu (the tour operator will provide your passport + documents to the Chinese Embassy).

The group visa only applies to the Yatra, and gives you and your group the ability to enter and exit Tibet on the same dates as the itinerary. The processing time at the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu can take some time; working days, Delay, or longer. Depending on dates, you may need to adjust your travel accordingly.

Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)

All foreign travellers to Tibet (including the Kailash Region) will require a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP). A TTP is the permission that you must have arranged through your tour operator (you cannot apply for one).

A TTP indicates where you can travel, what dates, and any other areas of interest permitted for activity, including Kailash. A TTP is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau, and checked at border control checkpoints and various hotels and sites in Tibet.

Alien's Travel Permit (ATP)

Your ATP will also be required in restricted areas and for travel. An ATP is in addition to a TTP, and your guide will usually arrange the ATP when you arrive in Lhasa or the anticipated checkpoint. An ATP is also required for travel in the Kailash area.

Military Area Entry Permit

The area around Kailash and the road that comes from the Nepal-Tibet line is a military zone. So, you need a Military Area Entry Permit.

As with all your permits, your tour operator will collect this permit and have it checked at the checkpoints along the trip.

Passport and Other Associated Documents

Verify that your passport has a minimum of 6 months' validity from the moment you enter the country, and bring along some extra passport photos for each visa/permit application.

Bring a number of photocopies of your passport and all of your permits for travel, so you do not have issues at the checkpoints and when checking into hotels.

    UK Traveller’s Quick Spiritual Escape

As a British, I found this ten-day Kailash package perfect.

Adventure Altitude Treks was the one coordinating all, i.e. from Heathrow flight prep to Tibet arrival, border permits, acclimatisation and Tibetan logistics.

Their UK‑orientation and professionalism made the hard bit of Parikrama seem really easy. The spiritual gains from Mansarovar and Mount Kailash totally overshadowed the physical hardships, and as a UK pilgrim, I had no worries.

Compact Kailash Yatra with UK Support

Being a UK resident and very short on holidays, I have opted for Adventure Altitude’s 10‑day Kailash package. They did the flight, border permits, TTPs, and visa all with UK convenience in mind.

The initial acclimatisation scheduled and the whole logistics chain from Kathmandu through Nepal‑Tibet border seemed well organised. The trek was tough but decent guides were very supportive. The spiritually sublime experience of the journey to Mansarovar and completion of the Parikrama is highly recommended to UK travellers.
