For Whom is Kailash Mansarovar Yatra From United States Trip Suitable For?

Non-Resident Indians (NRI)

Non-resident Indians (NRI) who temporarily reside may like the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra from the USA because it starts with a land journey into Nepal (typically Kathmandu) to collect a Chinese group visa and Tibet Travel Permit.

Adventure Altitude Treks Scheduled group tours are run from the Indian side and will allow NRI to do the pilgrimage starting from somewhere other than India whilst enrolling with the group tour, so all permits and logistics are a part of the organized group trip.

Pilgrimage is beyond the land crossing from where you depart to Nepal, so this is convenient for an NRI in the USA temporarily traveling with an organized group as part of their pilgrimage with the proper documentation.

Indian Americans

Permanent residents of Indian descent in the U.S. can also go to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake from Nepal.

You will need to get a visa to China, as well as a Tibet Travel Permit, from an authorized licensed agent, since you cannot travel to Tibet independently.

However, the Nepal route is a viable point of entry. Your other option is through India, but you shouldn't go that route until you have looked at every other option to get there. Group tours through Nepal handle all the permits and travel arrangements for you.

Us Citizens

Anyone with a United States passport will also have access to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which first requires a visit to Nepal to process the visa and obtain the permit.

The proper process for US citizens requires group travel to begin with an entry point into Nepal and secure a Chinese visa and a Tibet Travel Permit with the tour operator permittance; the overland travel into Tibet provides the boundaries of a pilgrimage.

This yatra is ultimately suitable for US citizens who can accept a physically challenging spiritual journey and consider the visa permit and group travel structure.

Mount Kailash tour From USA Best Time

Spring (May–June)

In the spring, daytime temperatures typically range from approximately 5 °C to 15 °C; however, during the spring, nights are still generally under zero temperatures. As the snow melts, the trails are becoming more accessible, and high-altitude vegetation begins to flower under the mighty presence of Kailash.

Conditions for trekking have vastly improved from winter conditions, and there are spectacular views to enjoy because of the clear skies. Adding to this, the Saga Dawa festival, which occurs in May or June, provides travelers with a nice spiritual environment to enjoy.

Pros

Cons

Daytime conditions are relatively enjoyable (5 °C–15 °C)

Nighttime temperatures can dip below freezing

Most of the snow is melted making trails more accessible

Considerable night chill including in high elevations, requires significantly warm clothing

Beautiful blooming mountains and budding trails

Occasional spring snowstorms can occur early in season

Culturally rich with Saga Dawa events

There is limited supply and high demand during festivals causing an increase in prices

Autumn (September–October)

A range of autumn characteristics resemble spring characteristics. The daytime temps are very comfortably cool (around 5 °C–15 °C), nighttime temperatures are in the range of -5 °C to -10 °C, and the skies are mostly beautifully clear with those rich colors, thanks to the typical clearing after the monsoon.

The beautiful contrasting fall colors against old monsoon colors have an incredibly beautiful visual aesthetic. In addition to fewer pilgrims to share your terrific solitude, you have the trail to yourself to enjoy more timely somber contemplation as you enjoy more time alone.

Pros

Cons

Beautiful, bright blue skies for mountain views

Nights can be very cold (-5° C to -10° C)

Lower numbers of pilgrims - quiet and isolated trails

Some facilities start to close

Beautiful fall colors & scenery

Early snowfall is a possibility - equipment required

Great trekking conditions - dry, stable conditions

Less daylight hours - affects planning

Accommodation on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for U.S. Pilgrims

There are a variety of accommodation options and price points along the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

Most likely, if you booked with a third party, you can expect to be lodged at a nice three-star hotel in Kathmandu (like Hotel Tibet or Hotel Arts) with wifi, hot showers, and comfortable beds.

Once we travel past the border into Tibet, it will become very basic: guesthouses with shared facilities (where you may pick up a bit of a community and spirituality) in towns Kenrung and Darchen.

On the actual trek itself, Dirapuk accommodation and Zutulpuk accommodation will be basic guest houses or tented camps, both places with shared facilities and shared facilities for group meals.

Luxury Accommodation Add Ons Option:

If you're looking to enhance your experience for a more comfortable stay during your trip to Kailash Mansarovar, you can always upgrade to luxury hotels for an additional cost:

  • Kerung: Hotel Pilgrimage has double/twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms.
  • Saga: Hotel Qiangjibu has double/twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms.
  • Lake Mansarovar: Natural Hot Spring Hotel has double/twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms.
  • Darchen: Hotel Himalaya has double/twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms.

You should note that accommodation in remote areas like Dirapuk and Zutulpuk offers more rudimentary accommodation and shared group facilities and basic toilets. They generally do not have bathrooms en-suite. These accommodations are opportunities for a rustic look at the experience in keeping with a spiritual pilgrimage.

Meals

As you are traveling from the USA on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the food that will be provided to the pilgrims is a complete vegetarian diet for the spiritual and religious phenomenon of the pilgrimage.

The vegetarian meals provided would include healthy, freshly made vegetarian meals such as rice, vegetable curry, lentil soup, momo, and thukpa; they should sustain sufficient energy and be deemed suitable for traveling at higher altitudes.

There will be three meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The cooking will be done with care and attention to diet by the cooks traveling alongside.

This vegetarian diet is in respect of the Buddhist and Hindu principles of non-violence and transformation of animal beings, allowing food to be light, nutritious, and appropriate for the modeling of traveling long distances by trekking.

Travel Insurance is Not Usable but Can be Purchased for Kailash Trip From United States

Travel insurance is generally restrictive in Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. This means, however, that most of it will be invalid once you cross the border and enter Tibet, as insurance policies usually do not cover that part of the journey. It is worth noting that they do not cover treks above 4500 meters, which is the case with Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.

You can certainly go for some groundwork on the travel insurance that allows you to use it in Nepal. The main point is that you would still be covered until the border crossing at Kerung; beyond that, however, you would simply not be included in the coverage.

Insurance would still be a good option to have and would provide you coverage for a portion of the trek in Nepal only in the case of an emergency medical evacuation and high altitude sickness. However, it has to be pointed out that the insurance claims for high-altitude trekking in Tibet are quite competitive because of the altitude and region bans as well.

FAQs
  • Yes, to get the Tibet Travel Permit it is necessary to travel in a group of at least four people. It is strictly prohibited to make a solo trip to Tibet for the Kailash Yatra.

  • The main reason that the Yatra requires moderate to good physical fitness is the high altitude and the trekking. Before the journey, doing cardio and endurance is recommended to be in shape.

  • People who are 12 to 70 years old can apply for permits. However, the health of the individual and their fitness level are more important. Older people should talk to a doctor before making the decision to travel.

  • Besides the direct route, overland via the Nepal-Tibet border at Kerung or flying from Kathmandu to Lhasa and then driving to Kailash. The helicopter is also an option if you need to get there faster.

  • Definitely, altitude sickness will happen. It is due to the high elevations. Proper acclimatization and medication can help reduce the symptoms and dangers.

  • Indian Rupees and Chinese Yuan are accepted, but the US Dollars should be turned into other currencies before going to Tibet. Cash is preferred because card payments are rarely accepted in remote areas.

  • Yes. Some itineraries include time to sightsee in Lhasa before heading to Mount Kailash making the pilgrimage even that much more culturally rich.

  • There will be basic medical facilities at major stops along the route, but there is the possibility of needing advanced medical care, in which case you may need to be evacuated from the route to Kathmandu or Lhasa. Travel Insurance that specifically includes evacuation is highly recommended for this reason.

  • Warm clothes, sturdy trekking shoes, altitude sickness medication, personal hygiene supplies, etc. Be sure to pack light, but sufficient, considering it will be cold and there will some variations in the weather.

  • US travelers should book the Yatra at least 3 months, or ideally, 6 months in advance, as permits, flights, and accommodations frequently fill quickly and need to be secured to better plan. Getting permits and securing flights and accommodations early will better help US travelers with planning their trip and saving money.

The hike to Kailash was a significant amount of work but extremely rewarding.

Traveling as a group provided reassurance and perspectives that made it possible for us to trek and be comfortable and safe. A truly transformational experience.

    Kailash Mansarovar - From America

The yatra to Kailash Mansarovar was absolutely a physical experience as a high-level trek, particularly the trek around Mount Kailash at a high altitude. The trek to Dolma La Pass at 5636 m elevation was unduly hard! The spiritual significance of the yatra and the stunning scenery make up for every difficult ascent.  Acclimatization or some training to get ready for this sort of trip is key to success if you want to embrace the whole experience.  Truly a once in a lifetime experience and all thanks to the Adventure Altitude Treks Team.
