The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a 10-day spiritual sojourn to the holy Mount Kailash in Tibet. The tour route starts with an overland journey from Kathmandu to the Nepal-Tibet border either via Dhunche or Syabrubesi or Timure. After crossing over to Tibet at Rasuwagadhi and completing the necessary immigration formalities, devotees are driven to Kerung County and then Saga, all the time acclimatizing slowly.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra- 10 Days Overview
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2025 takes travellers to Mount Kailash (6,638m) which is deeply sacred to the Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of Bon. It's considered the abode of Lord Shiva or Buddha Demchok while he is in deep meditation. Also, it is in close proximity to the origin points of four rivers in Asia – the Brahmaputra, Sutlej, Indus, and Karnali (a tributary of the Ganges).
In terms of height, Mt. Kailash might not be as high and mighty as some other famous peaks in this region, but never a mountaineer or a climber could summit this peak. Therefore, Kailash yatra is the ultimate journey to the "center of the universe." Many mountaineers have tried and failed to reach its summit, but local belief says that only those free from sin will reach its peak.
The trek (or Kora/Parikrama) around Mount Kailash generally takes three days for Foreigners whereas for the Local Tibetan people it only takes one day. You will be trekking 52 km in total. On day one of the Kailash Yatra 2025 Parikrama, you will start your trek from Darchen, 4650 meters, and head towards Dirapuk, 4860 meters, which is a modest walk of about 12 km, taking approximately 5-6 hours. En route, you get the first Darshan on the North face of Mount Kailash.
Day two of Kora on the Mount Kailash tour is a long & strenuous journey starting with an early morning hike to Zuthulphuk from Dirapuk for about 22 km. It takes around 8-9 hours to reach, covering Dolma La Pass at a height of 5860 meters above sea level. This is the highest point of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route.
Throughout the circumambulation of the Kailash Parvat, you will encounter amazing altitude changes, trekking from 4600m to 5650m. The views that await us are out of this world; with nothing preventing your eyes from reaching the horizon, you can now see the majestic Himalayas, wild Tibetan plateau, and wildlife, including antelopes, at this height.
At walking distance from Mt.Kailash is the Dirapuk Monastery, where we find the meditation cave of Milarepa – a saint whose life philosophy was simple living and high thinking. This monastery, which is over a thousand years old, has many ancient Buddhist artefacts and relics.
The trek around Adi Kailash Yatra is a physically demanding hike, and the altitude means regular rest days should be taken during the kora. Walk slowly and take long breaths. The trail crosses glaciers, which might sound dangerous but they are simple to walk over. After finishing the Parikrama, we head back from Darchen & drive back via same way Saga-Kerung and, cross the Nepal–China border, and arrive in Kathmandu ending the Kailash trip.
This trip to Kailash mansarovar is an adventure that's as much a physical challenge as it is a spiritual journey — sharing it with Tibetans pilgrims, meditating with or listening to renunciant monks chant in chapels full of centuries-old murals, striking up conversations with mendicant yogis. This Kailash Mansarovar tour transports pilgrims to an earlier century.
Despite all the hardships, there is something about this Kailash yatra package that makes it a lifetime experience. Call it the spiritual importance, the natural beauty, or your own sense of achievement – the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has been a dream pilgrimage for everyone who feels that this mountain is calling him. What Are The Main Attractions of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Package?
Mount Kailash
The Kailash Tatra Trip's main attraction is the mountain Kailash, which is considered sacred for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bons. This mountain, with an elevation of six thousand, is considered to be the actual physical image of the holy Mount Meru. No one has climbed this one because it is against the religion and has a pyramid shape. The place is considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva and the meditation cave of Milarepa, a famous Tibetan yogi. The mountain is very sacred, and thousands of pilgrims and trekkers walk around the base doing the kora, a rigorous trek. Above all, one can meditate before the beautiful vertical face of rock and ice on the northern side of Kailash.
Manasarovar Lake
Manasarovar Lake, at an elevation of 4,550 m, is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world and of great spiritual importance. A beautiful blue lake that looks like an oasis in the arid landscape. According to Hindu mythology, it is created by Brahma; drinking water out there or taking a bath is believed to wash away all the sins. In the Buddhist religion, this was a legendary lake, Anavatapta, where Maya is believed to have bathed before the lord Buddha was born. There are monasteries on its shore and excellent views over Mt Kailash. Most pilgrims do a parikrama (circumambulation) by vehicle, which adds up to around 90 km of track.
Dirapuk Monastery
Dirapuk Monastery is one of the most significant attractions that you visit during Kailash Parvat yatra, as this age-old monastery gives the closest and most coveted view of Mount Kailash's north face. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) had mediated here at this site, and his footprint can still be seen embedded in a rock. The monastery also holds precious Buddhist artifacts; thangkas (Tibetan Buddhist Paintings) can often be viewed within the monasteries. Apart from the above summoning elements for trekkers, staying here provides time for acclimatizing to further elevation and a tougher trek up to Dolma La pass (5,600 m). Surrounded by jagged surreal beauty and occasionally, if fortunate, then chance encounters with wildlife. Night halts here also provide an excellent opportunity to watch the mesmerizing sunset on Mount Kailash's north face.
Zuthulphuk Monastery
Zuthulphuk Monastery, at an elevation of 4,670 meters, is the final monastery on the kora before our return to Saga on our Kailash parvat Tour. It was associated with Milarepa and has a cave where he is reputed to have meditated and performed miracles. The Tibetan name means “cave of miracles,” referring to these legends. After the tough climb over Dolma La Pass (5,630 meters), Zuthulphuk has better accommodations for those weary-legged than seen at the monasteries earlier during this trek.
Dolma La Pass
Dolma La Pass, situated at an astounding 5,650 meters above sea level, is the highest and most difficult point of the Kailash Kora. Beyond being a physical challenge, though, Dolma La is an incredibly powerful spiritual experience for those on pilgrimage Adi Kailash Yatra. The climb up to Dolma La is steep and strenuous; it’s common for pilgrims to undertake this section in the early morning hours in order to pass over the heights before weather patterns change in the afternoon. Upon reaching the top of Dolma La, you’ll be greeted by billowing prayer flags and extraordinary views of Himalayan ranges that spread out before your eyes. Many pilgrims make offerings or perform certain rituals at this high point along the journey. Descend from Dolma La to Gauri Kund: a lake that inhabits a presence linked with Parvati from Hindu mythology.
Tarboche and Yama Dwar
Tarboche, a short drive from Darchen, is renowned for its enormous prayer flagpole and marks the trailhead of the Kailash Kora. Every Saga Dawa (the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar), the pole is lowered and then re-erected. This event attracts pilgrims from all over Tibet. Yama Dwar, which means “The Gate of the Lord of Death,” is located near Tarboche. It is represented by a simple chorten (Buddhist wayside shrine), which pilgrims pass before entering Kailash’s sacred domain. Here, blessings are often gathered in preparation for what lies ahead on this demanding circumambulation. At this spot, you will get one of your first great views south towards the southern face of Mount Kailash, as well as a view down the valley.
Kailash Glaciers
The glaciers of Mount Kailash are not part of the traditional kora, but they make for a mighty and magnificent adjunct to the pilgrimage if you have the time and energy. Towering at 5,200m and 5,700m, respectively, the glaciers feed into three of Asia’s most fabled rivers – Indus, Sutlej, and Brahmaputra. It is an arduous trek that requires total acclimatization. We’ll observe wildlife such as chiru (Tibetan antelope) and wild yak in a high-altitude wilderness Area.
