Kala Patthar, which means "Black Rock" in English is the most popular destination for trekkers doing the Everest Base Camp Trek. Located at an altitude of 5545 m / 18192 ft above from the sea level, Kala Patthar provides the stunning panoramic views of mountain ranges including Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and other mountain peaks.

Kala Patthar : Trip Facts

  • Kala Patthar Trek is not a trek by itself but a small hike route from Gorekshep on EBC trekking route.
  • It has an elevation of 5545 m / 18192 ft above sea level.)
  • You will have to walk round trip of 3.7 km / 2.3 miles (from and to Gorekshep)

Kala Patthar : Hiking Route from Gorekshep

Gorekshep, often known as the last village of Everest trekking route is the famous lodging end to reach Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp. After visiting Everest Base Camp that day, you will retrace back to Gorakshep for the night. 

Following the next day, your hiking to Kala Patthar starts in the early morning. Most people go in the morning for the sunrise. You will have to walk upward for around 2 to max. 3 hours. It is not difficult and risky to walk in the morning.
But, many people also prefer to go upward for the sunset. Sunset provides the damn awesome view of sun saying goodbye to mountains for that day. Saying this, there are some disadvantages while hiking for the sunset. You might not see the clear view of surroundings due to cloudy weather of evening and also, it is risky to walk in the dark hour.
After spending some time there, you will return back to Gorekshep from the same way. 

Kala Patthar Hiking Advice

There are some advice for you before starting your hiking journey to Kala Patthar

Get a Physical Map
While trekking to any place, physical map is mandatory. We recommend you to carry the entire map of EBC trekking route with you. It will help you in some case of emergency.

Geared and Dressed up properly
Going to upward elevation, there will always be risk of breezing wind and severe cold. So, you must be geared and dressed up properly in order to battle those situations. Try to wear clothes that prevent cold from inside. Also, carry trekking poles as you are heading uphill. Wear a very comfortable shoes.

Start Early
As you are going upward for the sunrise, start your trek early in the morning. Prepare and be ready for everything in the previous day and head before the dawn in the next day. Doing this, you will have the clear views of those stunning mountain peaks.

What can you see from top of Kala Patthar ?

Kala Patthar is also the top view point while trekking to Everest Base Camp. You can have a very awesome views of different mountains peaks like Mt. Lhotse, Nuptse including the Mt. Everest. It also provides an astonishing surrounding views of various landscapes apart from mountains. 

Best View From Kala Patthar : Sunrise or Sunset

Kala Patthar, the view point for Mt. Everest is the most-go place while you are in the Everest Base Camp Trekking. Talking about the view from Kala Patthar, different people and agencies have their own perspectives and reasons for that.

It doesnot mean that you should not go to Kala Patthar for the sunset. If the weather is clear and there is no chance of any cloudy weather, then you can head up in the afternoon time. You can have the great sunset view experience from the top and return back to your lodge house. But, travelling in the dusk time might be risky to walk in the steep area.
