1st Permit for Indians: Chinese Entry Visa and Cost
The first step of a million-mile journey is getting a Chinese Entry Visa — which you'll need to obtain from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in your home country or country of residence because China does not have an online visa application system, e-visa or visa-on-arrival service. In most countries, all visas must be applied for in person at the Chinese embassy.
The "L" category visa is standard and required for tourist travel into China — and it's also needed as a prerequisite when we apply for other essential permits later on for Tibet. 3rd Permit for Indians: Alien's Travel Permit and Cost
An Alien’s Travel Permit is required by Indian pilgrims who travel outside Lhasa city, i.e. to places like Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, for example. It’s issued by the Public Security Bureau (PSB) and must be carried along when travelling to ‘unopened’ Tibet. An Alien’s Travel Permit can be easily obtained from a Tibetan travel agent or guide upon arrival in Tibet and costs about 50 CNY per person, i.e. ₹700.
4th Permit for Indians: Restricted Area Permit (Military Permit):
Some parts of Tibet, particularly the border areas, also required a Restricted Area Permit or a Military Permit. It will be needed for Mount Kailash, Lake Mansarovar, etc. The Military permit would take a bit longer and would be around a week or two. The Military permit would be 100 to 300 CNY per person, i.e. ₹1,400 to ₹4,200.
5th Permit for Indians: Foreign Affairs Permit and Cost
For visiting remote and highly sensitive areas like Mount Kailash and Eastern Tibet, you would need a Foreign Affairs permit. This is issued from Lhasa by either the Lhasa Foreign Affairs Office or the Cultural Antiquities Department. Ideally, it takes around 10-15 work days, though most agents apply through the latter, which potentially takes a shorter time – but I have no such first-hand experience. The application should be routed through a travel agent along with a copy of your passport & valid Chinese Group Visa (aka China Visa). The exact cost of this particular Permit itself isn’t explicitly mentioned, but I guess you could keep aside about ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 INR for this.
Split Visa Fee For Indians (If You Got Separated From the Group in Tibet Kailash)
If you get sick or come across an emergency because of which you have to get separated from your group during the Mt. Kailash trip, then you need to bear some extra expenses. One of the main expenses in this situation is the Split Visa Fee that has to be borne by individuals coming back home alone without their group.
The Split Visa Fee is 60 Yuan, which in INR comes to around ₹716 (1 Yuan = 11.94 INR). This fee occurs only if, due to any medical problem, personal urgency or anything uninvited, one has to return with a Separate group than his/her own. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra From India: Transportation (Jeep) Cost For Indians After Reaching Nepal upto Tibet and Back
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra being the most sacred of Hindu pilgrimages utilizes various means of transport as part of the pilgrimage and they are jeep tours from places of importance. Jeep tours from places of importance for journeys from Kathmandu to Tibet or Kerung to Darchen is the primary mode of transport because hill roads are used. Jeep travel charges would be route-based, people in a group, etc. This is how transport fees are split with jeep fees coming under the extra fee for any circumstance.

The Journey of Mount Kailash Yatra begins with the Jeep drive from Kathmandu to the Kerung border, which is the Himalayan terrain in Nepal and the Tibetan region. For Indian Passport holders, the cost comes to around USD 500 per jeep (Appx. INR 41,000) whole group.
If we calculate the cost for this jeep from Kathmandu to Kerung per person basis, then it comes to around approx. $40 to $50 (approximately ₹3,300 to ₹4,150). But do remember that since it’s a part of your trip generally included in the package itinerary you should still check with your travel operator if it’s actually included. For anything extra or changes you would be liable for additional costs as per actual.
This Kerung to Kathmandu jeep ride is a turning point in that it takes us to the gateway to Tibet. It is a trip of scenic beauty but rugged roads that twist and turn through numerous hills and valleys, again following parallel to the pilgrims' physical and spiritual journey.

After reaching Kerung from here, the onward travel is towards Darchen, which is the base of Mount Kailash. The cost of jeep travel from Kerung to Darchen will be in similar ranges of 2,500 – 3,500 Yuan (Approx. ₹29,850 – ₹41,650) for your group of people. So in all, you multiply the number of people going there together and divide the total which comes out really very nominal.
For larger groups, the group-based pricing system considerably reduces the per-individual cost. But in case any traveller has to book even the jeep ride alone (like in cases of departure from the main group or special pick up and drop requirements), it may lead to a difference in prices. Travelers are advised to clarify this doubt directly from their tour operator.
Important Notice: This portion of the trip does not usually cost additional expense other than jeep fare which is pre-arranged. Steps to Follow as an Indian To Hire Horses or Yaks for Kailash Mansarovar Parikrama
Inform the Guides: The moment you reach Mansarovar, let your guides know that you need horses.
State the Number of Horses Needed: Let them know how many people in your group will be needing horses for parikrama.
Put Your Name on the List: To arrange horse transport, put your name on the transport list so that there will be enough horses.
Guides Prepare List: Guides will make a list and book horses through the local association.
Horse Pickup from Yama Dwar: The horse is supposed to start from Yama Dwar, where the association prepares the horse.
Order Placement at Mansarovar: Orders for the horse are placed by us at Mansarovar, and lunch is also taken by travellers at Mansarovar itself.
Travel to Darchen: The overnight halt is at Darchen, 40 km from Mansarovar.
Post-Breakfast Arrangement: Darchen duffel bags will be shifted separately after breakfast, and porters/ponies will be used for Parikarma to carry the same. And briefing/preparation for Kailash Parikrama.

If at all there is any health issue during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, especially when a pilgrim gets seriously sick or injured, the ambulance service by the local administration is a very good savior. The savior however generally is a rescue van or an ambulance which can be availed to shift people from remote parts of Kailash region to hospital. For group travellers, you don’t need to pay any additional charges for a guide as it’s included in your tour package. Independent traveller who are looking for permits on their own have to pay for a private guide. The cost of a Private Tibetan guide is around 500-800 Chinese Yuan per day (₹6,000-₹9,600 INR per day) depending on the days and experience of the guide.
Porter service is also included in the packages of the groups. They help the pilgrims carry the bags, especially in the hard terrains areas. Based on the group size and the bags, the porters are arranged within the group. One porter is included while booking a package for the group tour. But in case you want another porter, then extra cost will have to be borne.
Should Indian Passport Holders Purchase Travel Insurance for Kailash Parvat Yatra?
While standard policies will often exclude coverage in Tibet, insurance for the Nepal part of the trip, particularly up to Kerung (the border town between Nepal and Tibet), is highly recommended. The difficult road conditions along the way make travel insurance useful for any unforeseen eventualities, medical emergencies or travel-related issues.
Travel insurance can be obtained through providers in your home country or else purchased locally in Nepal. If you choose to purchase it in Nepal, the cost is about 2,268 INR. This insurance covers you for the entire trip until the Tibetan border. Please note, however, that due to no official paperwork and receipt system available in Tibet, claims cannot be made against accidents happening in Tibet.
