Where Do Planes Fly From to Reach Lukla?

Most people fly to Lukla from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. The flight to Lukla is quick, less than an hour, typically only 30 to 40 minutes. The flight goes over green hills and snowy mountain ranges. The flight is very nice, but you might get a little scared on the way because of sharp turns and high winds.

The only airplanes that fly to Lukla are small planes because the runway is so short. The flight is quick, but the pilots must be very careful!

How Long Will The Flight Take?

The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla takes just under an hour. But if the weather is bad, your flight could be delayed or cancelled. Small clouds or strong winds can make it dangerous to fly, even if the weather wasn't supposed to be bad initially.

This means that sometimes people have to wait for better weather. That's why travelers to Lukla always put in a few extra days - just in case.

What Makes Lukla the World’s Most Dangerous Airport?

It is because of Mountains All Around Lukla Airport is dropping from tall mountains. Planes have to fly through narrow pockets between hills. There is no way to turn around if something goes wrong. So pilots have to be skilled and very careful. The mountains make the flight very scenic and very narrow at the same time.

A Short Lukla Airport Runway

Lukla has a very short runway — only about 527 meters (1,729 feet). Most airports have runways that are much longer. Planes have to land on time! If a plane doesn't stop on time, it could hit a mountain or fall off a cliff. Therefore, only a few airplanes can fly to Lukla.

Sudden Weather Changes

The weather always changes suddenly in the mountains. It can be sunny one moment, and the next moment it can rain or be foggy. Pilots do not see the runway sometimes. Therefore many flights are delayed or canceled. This makes flying to Lukla a large challenge.

Only for Small Planes

Because of the short runway and high altitude, large planes cannot fly to Lukla. Only small planes that have special pilots can land safely. Even helicopters have to be very cautious when landing.

How is the Lukla Airport Runway Different?

It has a Very Short Runway. Most airports have long and flat runways from which big planes can easily take-off and land from. But Lukla Airport’s runway is very very short -- less than 600 meters long.

This means planes have to land quickly and stop quickly. There is no room for error on Lukla Airport’s runway. This is one major reason why Lukla is considered the world's most dangerous airport.

Sloped Runway (It Goes Uphill!)

Lukla Airport has another special quality that makes this airport unique. It has a sloped runway.

That’s right -- when planes are landing, the runway slope goes uphill; and when they take-off, the slope goes downhill! The slope helps planes slow down when landing like a brake. The slope helps planes take-off fast like a slide. This is clever and helpful; but also very, very difficult for pilots.

No Room for Mistakes

At almost every airport, if a plane has a problem, it can fly around and try again. Lukla does not have that option. There is a wall of rock on one end of the runway, and off the other end, a steep drop-off. Pilots must get this one right. That is why only experienced pilots are allowed to fly here.

How Pilots Land at Lukla?

Landing at Lukla is like an insane roller coaster ride in the sky.  The plane flies between really tall mountains and the hills and cliffs are so close you can almost reach out and touch them. The steep hills and cliffs start to drop down and then the plane gets closer to the airport and the runway just suddenly pops up out of nowhere.

Some people are thrilled. Some are a bit scared. A lot of them said they are returning to tell their friends about the insane ride they had to get there!

Pilots Must Have Special Training

Not everyone gets to fly to Lukla. Only the best pilots fly to Lukla. They have to have special mountain training in order to fly there. They learn to land on short runways, deal with heavy winds, and fly in close quarters.  Pilots must also have lots of flight time in the Nepali mountains before they fly to Lukla.

Training has to be done in the sight of the world’s highest mountains. So another safety measure is to make sure pilots get lots of practice.

These small planes are light, fast, and perfect for flying into the mountains. Sometimes helicopters can be an alternative to planes.

Helicopters are useful when:

  • The weather is so bad that the planes can’t fly.
  • Someone requires a rescue.
  • People are interested in taking a scenic flight over the mountains.

The helicopter can be more costly to fly than the airplane, but a helicopter flight is fast; and can go where a fixed wing airplane cannot.

No Large Planes Allowed

There can't be any large commercial planes – what you would be used to on large airports – land in Lukla. Large planes require long runways and level land; Lukla has neither.  The identification of just certain aircraft, and qualified pilots, allowed to land at Lukla is very intentional. Although these planes are small; they are capable, and certainly safe for the short duration of the trip.

What Happens If the Weather Is Bad?

If the Weather Is Bad then Flight Delays or Cancellations. The weather in the Himalayas can change quickly. It can be sunny one moment, and the next there are clouds, fog, or strong winds. If the weather is bad, planes can't fly to Lukla. It's dangerous flying in bad weather, and safety is always the priority.  As a result, flights are often delayed or canceled.

What Do Travelers Do?

If a flight is canceled: Travelers wait at the airport, often for hours or days, Some opt for a helicopter if the weather is better. Others choose to go back to their hotel and wait for better weather. While it can be annoying, this is all part of the fun of going to Everest!
